He projects as a league bat that can play multiple positions. He
didn’t get much opportunity with the Dodgers. So it is a pretty
good value for Martin.
2B/3B/LF/RF already have a lot of guys that really need some
playing time. I wonder if it signals Wisdom might be on the move
or maybe they’ll give him some time at first. Just kinda
interesting, not that it is bad.

Seems like McKinstry fills the lefty bat IF utility role that
Villar was supposed to do, plus can play OF.
He was mostly a SS at AAA this season, so can be a backup there
for multiple seasons going forward.
Definitely would seem to have a roster role here for some time
if he performs.

Cubs were very much in need of a lefty bat off the bench.
Lately, against a RH SP, Ross typically has had an all-righty
bench. So, Friday night, in 9th inning in a crucial spot, had to
let Schwindel hit against a tough righty, Doval, who carves up
righties like Schwindel. Although he managed to hit a high
bouncer to the mound that knocked in a run, that was a bad
match-up.

I think it's better than taking a flyer on a Single-A guy with
power and a giant hole in his swing and no less interesting than
the countless 95 wildman minor league relievers you can find in
the minors nowadays. That's about what we'd get in return for
Martin if we had gone the prospect age route.

BA had McKinstry as Dodgers #11 prospect pre-2021.

Assuming he can play adequate defense, he does open a few
possibilities.
Put him at third and move Wisdom to plug the black hole at
first.
Put him at second and move Morel to left, if Happ is traded.
Put him at second and move Morel to center, if Ortega is traded.
I would prefer the first one.
If he takes Martin's spot on the 40 man roster, which pitcher
comes up to replace Martin?

Athletic article on the trade mentioned playing him everyday and
in addition to Happ mentioned Ortega as someone who could get
traded.
Platooning isn’t just righty/lefty match-ups. They are looking
at the strengths of the hitter vs the strengths of a pitcher.
The Giants have been a team that has been doing a lot of
non-traditional platoons.

The Dodgers are in Denver. McKinstry should be able to make it
to Oracle Park in time for tonight's game.

Kevin Acee (Padres beat guy)
The Padres have a lot of things going on. Juan Soto, Willson
Contreras among them. Maybe eight or nine more things, someone
just said.
Trading Eric Hosmer is not one of those things.
Buster
While the baseball world continues to wait for resolution of the
Juan Soto talks, the Padres also involved in conversations about
Cubs catcher Willson Contreras.
