       A few things about Hosmer.
       1. He does better under bWAR (3.9 as a Padre)
       2. He plays in the NL park that depresses offense more than any
       NL park from 2020-22 (Statcast)
       3. His wRC+ in last three seasons is above average: 109-102-129
       (see 2 above)
       4. His bWAR in 2022 is 1.3, so he’s actually on a pace to be an
average regular in 2022 according to bWAR.
As a Cub, he would be an upgrade at 1B given the putrid
performance of 2022 Cubs 1B. Obviously, he isn’t worth close to
his contract but likely he would put up better offensive numbers
going from Petco to Wrigley. Also obviously, you better get very
nice player(s) back to take on that performance-to-contract guy.
       [/quote]
       1) Thanks to the strike shortened season that is only $23.6
million per WAR. fWAR more accurately reflects team records than
rWAR. Using a less accurate stat isn’t going to change my mind.
Further if rWAR is correct since his contract is only $13
million/year for the next 3 years he is pretty fairly valued and
the prospect cost to unload his contract is basically zero.
       2) league adjusted stats account for this
       3) He’s 20th amount Fangraphs 1B who qualified in wRC+
       4) WAR doesn’t work this way. You really need to stop doing
this. If this was true he would have excess value on his
contract and would cost the Cubs prospects to acquire him.
I’d happily take his contract for a stud prospect. He’s a bad
offensive/defensive 1B. Unless he changes his swing to hit the
ball more in the air his only value to the Cubs would be the
       prospect.

A lot of talk about the Cubs getting Vientos from the Mets.
Listening to the reports, Vientos strikes me as a Candelario who
plays first base, without the good defense. Prodigious power.
High strikeout rate. I wouldn't really be greatly disappointed,
but I was hoping for at least one more good piece for Contreras
and Robertson. A pitcher like Kilian, not an expected ace, but
someone with good potential a couple of years down the line.

If the Cubs acquire Vientos, I will be extremely disappointed.
More than that, however, I will be extremely shocked. I just
cannot see this leadership team being interested in him.

This is surprising. I wouldn't have thought Effross would have
enough trade value to make a deal worthwhile.
       Jeff Passan @JeffPassan
The New York Yankees are finalizing a deal to acquire
right-handed reliever Scott Effross from the Chicago Cubs,
sources tell ESPN. Effross, 28, is a rookie with five more years
of club control and has been fantastic this season.
       @JackCurryYES was on it.

Rosenthal says it’s RHP Hayden Wesneski, who MLB Pipeline had as
       the Yankees #7 prospect.

Seems like a good move on paper. A relief pitcher, even a very
good one, is replaceable. Wesneski appears to be just about ML
ready and could be a solid mid to bottom of the rotation
       starter.

Probably a smart move for the win now Yankees as well.
