Hot Stove ‘22

From Bowden chat at The Athletic…
What teams are the favorites to land Contreras? Will Happ be
traded? And what is the expected return for both? — Jack C.
The Astros, Mets, Giants, Padres or Guardians are the most
likely to acquire Contreras. I think Contreras will be traded
and there’s a 50-50 chance Happ gets moved, too. Contreras is a
rental, but the Cubs should be able to get a top-five and a
top-15 prospect from an organization in return. Happ, who is
under team control through next year, could yield a top-10 and a
top-30 prospect.

Passan mentioned the Cubs might be more likely to do a package
deal.
One thing I've noticed about looking at prospects lists is you
used to be able to go the Cubs should go after x and have a
decent idea of who to target. No with the hitting and pitching
development I look at lists and go but if they could fix this
problem he'd be amazing. The problem is we don't really have a
clue what can and can't be fixed.

I can support moving Happ and even Hendricks. I think Ortega
will be dealt as will Robertson, Simmons, and maybe Wick. But
Contreras strikes me as the kind of guy you go after when you're
trying to build a champion for his experience, his bat, and his
leadership. SMH if they deal him, I don't care what they get
back.

Dan Szymborski at Fangraphs has a piece up with his trade
proposals.
Has Contreras to Mets even-up to Mets for Mark Vientos, a power
guy, dicey defensive profile, and major league ready to take
over 1B for Cubs if this happened.
Vientos a few months farther along than Matt Mervis but who
knows who’ll be better a year from now. Not knocked out by this
proposal but Vientos has upside. 30% K guy, unlikely to play 3B
in majors, almost two years younger than Mervis, righty all the
way.
Kind of intrigued by Mets pitching prospect Matt Allan, a TJS
lefty who should be back soon. Maybe a package with Vientos for
Contreras and Robertson? Maybe Cubs should get a third guy too.

Vientos doesn't seem like the type of trade player that the Cubs
want. While the Mets certainly have a need for Contreras their
minor leaguers make it difficult to see a trade work, so maybe
Willson plus a reliever makes sense.
The Happ trade is light. Colas is interesting, but he's a soon
to be 24 year old with 26 PA in AA. The Cubs are loaded at OF
already too. Kelley was a big name out of the draft, but he has
some serious control issues. Vera does too. I think that one
is a bit forced.

Last year I totally understood the decision to trade each of the
big three Cubs, even if I felt sad about them leaving. I seem to
feel at least as sad this year about losing Contreras and
possibly Happ, but I'm less clear about the necessity of doing
it. I sure as heck hope the Cubs get an awesome return for
Contreras, and even more so for Happ, given his age and the
potential he has for being a building piece going forward (with
another year to reach an extension).

Robertson wasn't used to close again today. He'll soon be gone.
