Nico's HR was on a bad hanger, but it's encouraging that he did
what he did. Most HRs are on mistakes anyway.
If the Cubs are going to have any sort of semi-successful season
(on the field), getting off to a good start would help. So much
of the roster is unproven - to varying degrees - and confidence
will be a big deal.

I saw two Cubs games in person last year. One was the last game
they played before the All-Star break against the Cardinals at
Wrigley which was getting pretty close to being the swan song
for the Bryant, Rizzo, Baez crew. The other was a game in
Cincinnati with the likes of Ortega, Wisdom, Schwindel, Happ
etc.
The Cubs game with the 2016 Cubs core winding their time down
was a completely listless affair, ending in a Cubs loss, and it
was the game where Contreras chewed the team out for not putting
forth a good effort after the game. The Cubs weren't a lot of
fun to watch that game, and I just got more enjoyment out of
going to Wrigley for the first time in five years more than
anything that was happening on the field.
The Ortega/Schwindel Cubs played hard and smart against the Reds
and won fairly handily. Even without nearly the talent the Cubs
had in July, they were playing hard and a lot more fun to watch.
We may not be great this year, but these guys will bust their
tails off. We do have a team full of guys that were written off
by other teams, weren't handed anything, and at least a few of
them probably have some chips on their shoulders. Days like
today can show that if things go in the right way and if we take
advantage of some mistakes that we can have some fun wins to
enjoy.

Agreed. The biggest variable is that you have to be able to run
out a viable starting pitcher every day. Can we do that? Time
will tell.

That’s all well and good, but usually guys are written off by
organizations for the Occam’s Razor reason. And contenders
aren’t built out of those guys very often. It’ll be nice to see
guys playing hard to prove themselves, but your chances of
success are better with a bunch of elite players on the roster.
After the mental funk the Cubs have seemed to be in as their
core slowly faded into the wallpaper these last couple of
seasons, it’s easy to see why this sort of roster would seem
refreshing. Enjoy first place while we have it because it won’t
be for long, but the sorting hat process will be interesting to
watch all season.

I do actually believe that the new "market inefficiency" is AAAA
players who were never given a real shot. Can you make a
contender's "core" out of these players? Nope. But I think you
can round out a roster in a very cost effective way with them.

When you say “round out a roster” do you mean fill in around the
edges for a contender (and I do think that’s possible)? Or you
mean make an entire roster out of them, which is pretty much
what the Cubs have done apart from about four or five guys? I
mean you can do that, but you sure as hell can’t contend doing
it.

We got one win, the first win, we’re in first place.
