One thing not discussed above regarding Pena is his speed, or
lack thereof. His walks would be much more valuable if he
consistently scored on doubles or advanced to third on singles.
It usually takes an extra-base hit to score him from second
base. I thought his fair market value was $3-$4 when Hendry
signed him last year, and I haven't changed my mind.

Three to four dollars? And you haven't changed your mind about
what? What Hendry signed him for?
Really, these posts are getting more and more difficult to

If he remains with arbitration, I believe the Cubs would not be
able to trade him until some time well into the season (though I
don't remember the date), and if the Cubs resign Pena, it is
unlikely LaHair would get the playing time needed to tell if he
is "something." Even if he remains as result of arbitration
Lahair would be unlikely to get playing time.... unless the Cubs
take the route I have urged... and that is not going to happen.

I have no idea how Epstein feels about LaHair, Colvin, Vitters
or any of the other possible first baseman (including free
agents and possible trades), but Pena would be at best a
placeholder. Ten million seems like an awful lot to pay for a
placeholder.

One of the things that Theo stresses is the impact and
possibility of injury. Given Pujols' age, and the numerous minor
ailments he seems to have, I doubt Theo would be excited to sign
him to a major deal.
Fielder might draw a little more interest from Theo, and I think
that's reasonable, but only if you are confident in his
conditioning regimen.
In the end, Adrian Gonzalez was the guy Theo really wanted and
got. It's unfortunate he wasn't yet the Cub GM.

The other thing I'll say is that if the Reds really are
listening to offers on Votto, that's a guy I could see Theo
going all-in on.

Finally, if there's a realistic deal out there for LoMo, that's
probably the best option to pursue, IMO. Z, a ton of cash, and a
couple mid-tier prospects for LoMo.

Since it sounds like the Marlins may want to dump Nolasco and
their closer is questionable going forward, I'd try to expand a
deal to include Marmol and Nolasco.
