Neither do the good teams behave as you describe.

money has because they are a contender. The vast majority of
top players tend to go to the top bidder, with issues such as
potential World Series Ring, home town discount, and other such
incentives playing a very distant second or third with the vast
       majority of free agents....

Dave, you may be right. But I think marketplace offers often
differ by <10%. And I think often the home team can scramble up
a competitive offer, even if not a top offer. Such that all
those other tiebreakers do tip things.
Players are human beings. They love their wives and their
children, and have friendships and families. Good players are
competitors who want to enjoy both personal and team success. I
think the Cubs need to significantly outbid competitors for
Correa or other good players. Ties work against us.
Conversely, *IF* they did sign him, he was treated well and his
family built friendships, and the Cubs seemed poised to be
serious contenders for a while, I think opponents would need to
significantly outbid the Cubs. Ties would work for us. But I
think those tie-breakers are often important, when one offer
       doesn't blow others away.

       Wow. So a 50M, 50M, 50M w/opt out, 1M, 1M , 1M,1M,1M would get
us Correa? Front loaded with opt outs...great idea.

I know you're mostly joking, but 155/8 is nowhere close to the
AAV Correa is going to get. That doesn't mean to concept it
ludicrous, though. Bump the numbers in the later years so the
total is something like 300/9 and you might have a shot.

Unless he had a career ending injury in one of the first three
       years, it's really 3/150.

Probably. But if you, say, went 150M for the first 3 years and
6 more at 180 total, he might stick around if, for example, he
regresses a little to a 4 WAR player in the first 3 years.

The Cubs don't need to get creative. The easiest solution is
that they just act like the major market team they are and give
Correa the 10 year, $300+ million contract he wants.

Of course, the easiest solution is not always the best solution.

Clint Frazier is excited to be joining us but seems to be a bit
       of a malcontent:

He also heaps praise on our uniforms even though the Cubs and
Yankees have some of the most similar home uniforms in baseball.
And he wants to wear #77 with us. Not sure I'm going to like
       this guy.
