I'm no scout, so I have no idea whether Suzuki will be any good,
and if he's a guy to be prioritized or avoided.
I'm just thinking that the Cubs outfield will potentially be
really bad. *IF* you were to sign Correa, (hypothetical for
sure....), and *IF* you added one outfielder who proved to be
more asset than liability, the skeleton of a team might be much
better.
It's probably just wishful thinking to imagine that the Cubs
might end up finding a solid outfielder. But *IF* they could,
it would be really helpful. The present outfield has Happ,
Ortega, Heyward, and castoffs like Hermosillo, Frazier, and
Ramirez. *IF* they could hypothetically add a good outfielder
who could hit, it would be easier to mix-and-match with the
other guys and hope to provide some outfield offense.

Contreras C, Tank 1B, Hoerner 2B, Wisdom 3B, Correa SS, Suzuki
LF, Ortega CF, Bryant RF
Trade Happ for pitching, DFA Heyward. Yes, I know Bryant is a
FA, but he's the only one I'd try to get back, unless they want
to gam ble that Schwarber would fill probable DH.

Jesse Rogers
@JesseRogersESPN
Mentioned this on radio yesterday, re the story out there that
Carlos Correa called Javy Baez for info on playing for the Cubs,
according to a source close to Baez, this call never happened.

Replying to
also,I think the plan is to LISTEN on Willson, he's up in a
year, and maybe move him. And the plan is to sign guys with 1-3
years etc. stay flexible right now. Kind of wait for the Darvish
teenagers and others to be ready then go hard after it. Which
means they COULD flip in July

As much as I would like to believe the Cubs will be serious
contenders for Correa, I think that's a pipedream.

Me too. I have no idea if Rogers is as well connected as he
once was though.

I would guess that Rogers isn't that well-connected at this
point. He hasn't really been on the Cubs beat for a few years
now, and there has been a lot of turnover in the front office
since he transitioned to being more of a national reporter for
ESPN. And he wasn't the best of the beat writers even when he
was at Wrigley daily.
I would be pretty shocked if Correa hadn't reached out to Baez
(or someone else who has played with the Cubs) at this point,
even if it's just a text. I assume free agent players are
contacting guys they know on other teams all the time to help
find their best fit. I'd expect that he's reached out to players
on every team that he's considering right now.
It's pretty doubtful that the Cubs will sign Correa even though
it should be a no-brainer. But the fact that they signed Stroman
makes it seem infinitely more possible than it did three days
ago.

Well, Correa won’t be signing anywhere for a few months in any
case, so plenty of time to wonder if he’s on Cubs radar or not.
Thought for some time Correa only QO guy Cubs might actually
pursue.
We didn’t know about Cubs 2022 payroll 10 days ago, we don't
know now, and we won’t know for a long time. All speculation.
My own guess is that Correa-to-Cubs is possible. Cubs beat
writers have been kind of locked in on the no Cubs big free
agents theory for months but, personally, I kind of doubt they
actually know any more than what we hear and read from Hoyer
publicly. Local Cubs beat writers rarely break any transaction
news these days. If they get solid info, they report it.
Otherwise, they’re just speculating like we do here. If you
read/listen closely to them, you can tell what is speculation
and what is news journalism.
Market for Correa is tightening. But, probably still handful of
clubs with interest, which is plenty. Rangers spent big on two
middle IFers, so maybe Tigers will too. Maybe lockout delay is
good for Cubs re. Correa——let the notion percolate for awhile.
Maybe there won’t be a Seager-like long term deal out there for
him right now, so he’ll take a shorter seal with huge AAV.
That’s something Cubs can do. And, wouldn’t rule out a longer
deal either——who knows. Correa will be very good for a very long
time.
All speculation.

I think the path to Correa as a Cub, if any, will involve three
things.
- A shorter than expected overall guarantee. Maybe 8 years
instead of 10.
- One or more opt outs. Like after Y3 or after Y2 and Y4.
- Front loading.
