Stroman on Twitter.
Chicago has always been one of my favorite cities. Culture and
passion everywhere. Beyond excited to pitch in front one of the
best fan bases in all of sports. Thank you to everyone in the

Marcus Stroman had uniform #0 with the Mets. The Cubs have
never had a player with my old number.

Wow, higher AAV, shorter term deal for Stroman. I was sure it
was going to be similar to the deals Gausman and Ray signed.

Marcus Stroman signed a three-year, $71 million contract with
the Chicago Cubs that includes an opt out after the second
season, sources tell ESPN. He’ll make $25 million in 2022, $25
million in 2023 and $21 million in 2024. It includes $2M
escalators for 160 IP in ‘22 and ‘23.

As long as he stays healthy, he's almost definitely opting out
after 2023. I think it's probably more likely to end up being a
2 year deal.

I read that the 2M bonuses, if reached, roll into the year 3
salary, so the 3rd year could also be 25M…

I think you have to give the Cubs the benefit of the doubt and
assume the reason they sat out the likes of Matz and Gray was
because they preferred Stroman relative to their eventual
contracts. You can question that judgment (I do) but presumably
that's the case.
But in a vacuum, Stroman is a strange signing for the Cubs.
You'd think you either go really big, like Seager, or stick to
sign-and-flip 1-year guys. It's not a risk in that they have a
ton of money, but signing Stroman (especially as he's not a guy
who misses that many bats) to effectively a two-year deal is
odd.

2-3 year contracts won’t hurt this team future. If he opts out
after 2 years it is even better for the Cubs.
Having another contact oriented pitching staff depresses me
though.

Does the shorter deal for Stroman mean more trade value for the
Cubs if they deal him? What are the trade protections for
Stroman?
