If they sign Stroman, I really doubt they'd stop spending for
this year. I'd imagine that the spending would include a better
defensive shortstop and an improved corner infielder that could
move Schwindel to DH (either Rizzo on a short term deal or a 3B
that would move Wisdom to 1B).
I still don't buy that the Cubs have to wait 3-5 years to
contend. They can easily spend enough to be at least a wild card
contender by 2023 if they want to do it (don't forget there will
likely be expanded playoffs).

If we brought Rizzo back, I presume we would have to at least
match the earlier offer we gave him (that he turned down)…
Otherwise, he won't be a happy Rizzo...
Who's willing to go 5/70 (I believe that was the earlier
offer...)?

I wouldn't go 5/$70 for Rizzo, but I don't think his market is
going to develop and he'll be available for a lot cheaper. He
wasn't that good this year, and first basemen over 30 don't earn
much in free agency unless they're MVP level players like
Freeman. That AAV might be right, but I don't think he's getting
close to 5 years.

In the unlikely event the Cubs are going to sign anybody other
teams actually want, Stroman makes the least sense for me.

OK, then who thinks Rizzo will be happy accepting a lesser deal
with the Cubs?
What's he gonna say when they ask him about it? "Oh, you know,
Kevin really missed his doggy day care in Wrigleyville…"

Rizzo is really the only real option to updrade it.
That doesn't really address the fact that you starting OF is
Happ, Ortega, Heyward. That needs an upgrade on defense and
offense. Plus you need another starter and some stability in
the bullpen and you need to extend Willson. This team has a
crap ton of flaws and they aren't going to be fixed unless you
believe Schwindel/Wisdom/Ortega are real or prospects come up.
Stroman's sinker velocity 2017: 93.3 2018: 92.3 2019: 92.5 2021:
91.9. but his decline fits with a pitchers aging curve for
fastball velocity. 2022/23 are going to be the best years of
any deal for Stroman and I don't see any scenario where the Cubs
are better than when they started 2021.
