That seems like a good fit--I'm sure they'd throw in Tom Murphy
on top of whatever prospects they sent to back up Gomes.
Thinking about it more, I wouldn't be surprised if Miami was
still in the market for a catcher. The universal DH would have
all the same benefits for them, and Contreras is still a
significantly better hitter than Stallings.
The Cubs could trade Contreras for one of the Marlins
starters/starting prospect (which has been a rumor off and on
since last offseason), and I'm sure they'd be willing to throw
in Alfaro to split time with Gomes.

Also fun to note Gomes is the biggest position player contract
in free agency since Jason Heyward

Thinking out loud...
Would Freddie Freeman take 6/210? If so, should we offer it? How
likely is it that the Dodgers, Yankees, or Braves match such an
offer?
We really need a LHH with some pop.

If the rumors are true, that is exactly what the Dodgers are
offering.

He would turn 39 at the end of a 7 year deal…if that was a
dealbreaker.
I can see some logic in signing FF and going cheap with an
Andrelton Simmons for 5M or so at SS.

As much as I like Freeman and as much as I want to see the Cubs
spend this offseason to speed the rebuild, I think a 32 year old
first baseman on a long term deal just isn't a good fit for the
Cubs. If they're going to sign a long-ish term LH bat, I think
Michael Conforto coming off a down year would be the best fit.
I bet the Cubs will ultimately end up with Rizzo and/or Kyle
Seager on a short term deal if/when their markets don't develop.

Agree w/ br. Don't think Freeman is right fit for this team. Too
old and too position-locked for our current state.

Guessing that Gomes signing has nothing to do with chances of
Contreras staying or leaving.
Going to try to extend Contreras. If successful, great, there
will be playing time for both (especially with DH) and Cubs
don’t want a repeat of the 2021 year-long search for a backup.
And, less of a catching load for Contreras.
If no extension and Contreras traded, Gomes is insurance for
that——as a legit starter or co-starter in tandem with a somewhat
lesser guy who can be acquired later.

Trevor Megill was non-tendered. There was a Twitter exchange
earlier that suggested that Michael Hermosillo was also
non-tendered. I imagine that Sergio Alcantara is also on the
bubble.

I agree that FF isn’t exactly a great fit for where we are right
now…I’m just trying to find a LH bat with some pop and OBP/SLG
skills…
