Moran’s days as a 3B, ANYWHERE, are over and done with. Zero
games there in 2021 and four in 2020.
He was -27 DRS in less than 2,000 career innings at 3B, which is
remarkably bad.

Well, they're not paying Gomes to be a backup. So Contreras is
on his way out (seems like they probably already have something
lined up because now they have no leverage).
Jeff Passan @JeffPassan
Catcher Yan Gomes and the Chicago Cubs are in agreement on a
two-year, $13 million contract, sources familiar with the deal
tell ESPN. @CraigMish was on the news.

Well at least I won't have to worry about baseball for a while.
This has been a none fun 24 hours of sports fandom for me.

Hoyer has repeatedly expressed regret that Contreras spent so
much time behind the plate last year and said it is a priority
to make sure that doesn't happen going forward. Gomes is going
to be 34 years old in 2022. So I'm not sure it is inconceivable
that he would be a backup to Contreras especially with the
likelihood of a DH.

Gomes has a third year option for $6 million.
Who still needs a catcher now that the Marlins have traded for
Stallings? Gary Sanchez is a non-tender candidate, would the
Yankees be interested?

If there's a DH in the NL, there would be plenty of ABs for
Contreras. I'm betting he stays.

Based on how the Cubs have behaved over the past year, I don't
know why we should have any expectation that they'll keep
Contreras. Maybe it'll happen, but I think it's far more likely
he gets traded.
There was a report yesterday that the Cubs haven't even started
to talk about an extension with Contreras. That's not a good
sign if you're expecting them to keep him.

Agree, Gomes at his age, quality, and contract, that's not a
primary catcher deal. That's a deal where Contreras can rest;
DH; play LF; or *IF* you get a trade you want to make, you've
got a roster-filler.
