When the season starts, 12 teams will have new hitting coaches.
The median tenure within the organization for all 30 hitting
coaches is 1.5 years. And that’s counting years within the org,
not in the role itself. Tough gig.

I wonder if part of that is today’s hitting coaches are often
encouraged to teach junky modern theories that don’t lead to
particularly great hitting.

I think hitting is just starting to catch up to pitching in the
tech game, so trying to find guys that can communicate and teach
it is hard. Then their is that fact that pitchers are throwing
harder and breaking balls are getting improved at fast rate.
Hitting is just hard now. Dunstan highest K% with the Cubs was
18.9%, if prime Dunstan was playing now I think it would be a
lot higher.

Wait a minute, CUBluejay, never underestimate what might have
happened once the "Shawon-O-Meter" became a thing.
That sure fired up his fan base and, as I recall, Shawon
responded pretty well to it, too. I suspect a lot of his fans
back then would have said he could hit a 120mph fastball or a
Koufax curve whenever he chose to do so! (if only Shawon's
pitch recognition would have been better!)

So apparently MLB offered free agency at 29.5 years old and
instead of arbitration paying those players based off of years
experience a fWAR.
I think a nice compromise would be free agency 26-27 or a set
amount of time in the org and a minimum salary of something like
$1-1.5 million. It eliminates the stupid service time
manipulation and gets money to free agents that might actually
be worth it.

If they are given free agency at age 26 or 27, you would have a
lot of prospects released at age 24 or 24 if they were not ready
to come up by that time. Why pay for developing someone if you
get little value from that development? And probably fewer
college players would be drafted or signed as a free agent in
that situation. I would think you would have to give a minimum
length of time that the player would be tied to the team that
developed him.

It would incentive teams to sign guys at a younger age as well
to get more control.
You could do different years of control for college guys vs high
school vs IFA as well, but it should be a priority to get guys
onto the market at a younger age or a restrictive free agency
instead of arbitration.

every damb player, including each pitcher. When asked about the
DH, the Cubs spokesman looked puzzled. "DH?"
