I could also see them go after one of the QO guys, especially
if they end up trading Kyle Hendricks
I've heard some people claim that it makes sense to trade Kyle
because his velocity profile is similar to Wade Miley? Does this
make sense given one is a lefty and the other a rightly?

I think it makes sense to consider trading Hendricks contingent
on the return (he’s coming off a bad season). But to make any
decision of consequence based on Miley would be insane.

The Rockies are an incredibly incompetent franchise.
Descalfini might be an interesting option. I expect him to get
less than Gray, and he’s a relatively low-risk guy. He and
Rodon would be an interesting pairing.

I'm not really interested in Rodon. With his injury history and
arm problems at the end of the year, I don't think you can count
on him for much. Gray is the guy to target, IMO, just to see
what he can do away from the Rockies and Coors. Really, I
wouldn't mind seeing them add both Gray and DeSclafani if
they're not going to get into the Gausman/Ray/Stroman market.
I still see no chance of Hendricks being traded, and not just
because his value is down right now. I'm still convinced that
the Cubs just look at him as having elite off-the-field value.
If some version of this front office is around when his playing
career is over, Kyle is immediately going to have a role either
as a coach or in the front office.

I would like for someone to explain why Gray should be expected
to do better away from Coors in the future when he has not done
so up to now. His career BA, OBA, SLG, OPS are all actually
better at home than away. I assume I am missing something, so
please help me understand what it is.

Home/away splits just don't mean that much for legitimately good
Rockies players. Breaking balls work differently at Coors than
they do everywhere else. Give Gray an environment where his
slider and curveball don't move completely differently every
other start, and maybe he has another level.
Plus, the Rockies are by far the worst organization in baseball.
Playing for another organization might help Gray more than
leaving Coors.

Everything BR said plus pitch mix and grip changes.
Gray’s fastball gets hit hard so he might benefit from 2 seamer
up in the zone that the Cubs like to deploy.
His slider is a bad pitch and it is second most frequent.
Increasing his curve usage and redesigning the slider or making
it a cutter could be useful.
Heaney is a guy that you could take a shot on and try and make
him into another Ray. Improve his control just a bit and get him
so anti-homer confidence when it is cold in Wrigley and he has
upside.
Rodon is more risky, but the White Sox pitching infrastructure
isn’t great and he’s a guy if you could teach him the Vulcan
change could be really special.
Gray would give you a nice base to build off of.
Hendricks, Gray, Rodon, Miley, Adbert/Steele/Thompson/Heaney is
a rotation that has a chance to compete in the division.
That is a rotation has isn’t just pitch to contact and has some
depth.

I have to say, I disagree here. Who should be gambling on
high-risk, high-upside pitchers if not the Cubs? Rodon at his
best is better than any of the other names we’re talking about.

free agency, per the Cubs. So, 40-man roster is at 35 right now.
