Jordan Bastian
Wade Miley had a 3.37 ERA in 28 starts last season for the Reds.
His deal includes a $10 million team option (or $1 million
buyout) for 2022. Cubs will pick that option up, so it
essentially serves as a 1-year signing.

Sure, but what are looking for?
That number would be suppressed if you are looking at how teams
value WAR by pre arb and arb players.
Usually the $/WAR is based off of free agents signings.

Cubs: We need power arms and strike outs, we relied too much on
pitch to contact last year.
Cubs: 1st addition to the rotation, Wade Miley.
He's fine if he is your 4th/5th starter, but this being the
first move isn't giving me warm fuzzies. To put it another way
this is an older, left handed version of Davies.

Blue, that was my first thought, too. The take now is kinda
like what the take was on Davies when we got him, only Miley is
6 years older, and Davies pre-Cub ERA had been variably better.
Of course the fact that Davies fell off the cliff with the Cubs
doesn't necessitate that Miley will do so likewise.
Maybe he'll be capable, and maybe you'll be able to trade him
for a B-prospect come July, who knows?

They really need to make the biggest one year offer to
Syndergaard.
I'm interested to see if the Cubs will be in on Gausman or Ray.
If the Cubs are being honest and this isn't a 5 year plan like
the last rebuild, they do need to shop in the top end of the
market for a few core players.

I was just wondering if it made sense to ask how much team WAR
we would have to acquire to be in the competitive range.

To be a top 10ish team in baseball the 2021 Cubs would have
needed around an 15-20 fWAR, but the 2022 Cubs would depend on
how you project the guys currently on the roster. To be near
competitive you probably need around 35-40 fWAR, so a lot to get
there. The Cubs, even if they are going to be cheap probably
have at least $70 million to spend. It is doable if they spend
it on the right guys, but is is hard and a lot of things need to
go right.

Whether or not Miley helps to remake the profile of the
rotation, picking him up for ~$10M is a great value. Like the
move.

Miley is neither a reliable innings-eater or a power arm, both
of which are our main requirements for SP. But it’s only money,
we should theoretically have plenty of that, and we aren’t
contending next year anyway. This smacks of a move you make
hoping you can flip the guy at the deadline.

If he is doing well enough that he could bring back a decent
prospect, I certainly hope that they flip him, if they do not
extend him.
