I’m going to go back a few years before 1990 and add Greg
Maddux. That’s an additional 104 WAR to the 2nd round total.

Given where the Cubs are now, think brass will be very reluctant
to give up that 2nd round pick.
For Correa or Seager, sure, but would be surprised if for Jon
Gray or the like.

You also lose the slot money with giving up the second rounder
($1.79 million last year for the 7th pick in the second round).
Looking at the last 6 picks
Davis is likely a top 10 prospect in Baseball by the time he
gets called up.
Triantos is really interesting
Strumpf, Carraway could at least be role players.
Cole is trending towards a bust
Looking at realistically where the Cubs are in a competitive
window the second rounder has more value to the Cubs. I think
Hendricks and Contreras both getting traded this off-season is
more likely than the Cubs signing a QO free agent.

Among the best 2nd round picks of all time. But at 31st
overall, not a 2nd rounder today. That list from Craig is very
sobering. After whiffing in the first round (Drew Hall), the '84
draft also gave us Moyer (and Pico) in later rounds.

Yeah, the shills will drool all over that move if they make it.
The only upside to signing the bad Seager is that he might be
flippable for a B prospect at the deadline if he’s only mediocre
and not terrible.

Honest question. Say the Cubs sign Correa, how many games do you
think they win in 2022? That team still needs multiple starting
pitchers, positional players, bullpen help. Unless the Ricketts
family is going to really spend money this team is fixable.
I don’t think Sharma is carrying water for the team. I think he
is just saying what makes the most sense for the Cubs when they
gave up at the trade deadline. If you listen to the podcast they
do they make it pretty clear they’d rather be covering a good
Cubs team vs whatever this team is going to try and pretend to
be next year.
So let me be really clear. I think it sucks the Cubs choose to
blow up the core. I think the Ricketts family is being cheap. I
also think it makes zero sense for this team to spend big
dollars on multi year deals to try and make some fans feel
better. The Cubs choose a path when the traded Darvish for
teenagers. The continued to get more of those teenagers when
they tore down the core. This team is years away from being
good. This sucks, but it is what it is.

Lee Smith was another great 2nd rounder. Again, not close to
today's 2nd round, though. He was #28.

Craig-hey, you listed Orie…and he was #29 overall, so Smith and
Maddux count (actually Orie was a 1st round sandwich pick).

Ah, thanks, you're right Reb! Orie shouldn't have been
included. And Orie, with the 1.5 WAR with the Cubs, he was the
guy I'd noted as the most Cubs-productive! So if I take Orie
and his 1.5 WAR off the list, who would be the next most WAR
from an actual 2nd rounder 1990 or later?
-Underwood was 0.0 WAR (using baseball reference listing.)
-Abott is -0.4
-Bobby Hill was 0.2 WAR
-Rob Zastryzny was 0.2
-Lemahieu -0.2
-Kelton -0.1
So, Zastryzny and Hill at 0.2 WAR have given the best cumulative
Cubs WAR of any of our ≥1990 2nd rounders! And our net
WAR from 2nd rounders is sub-zero!

This is obviously a very special anniversary, and I've been
watching a lot of video. It's a very bittersweet feeling - Game
7 with its roller-coaster glass case of emotion, the
celebrations on the streets, the 5 million at the party. I
still get a little choked up with those moments, but it's hard
to believe that with so many young stars who seemed to love
being together, so much possibility, that this was as good as it
gets. How in the world did that happen?
