How many hitting coaches is that for the cubs now in the last 5
years?

Barry Bonds' syringe might be worth more.

Well Jon Gray had his chance at 3 years and $35-40 million from
the Rockies, and he turned it down. Granted, the Rockies would
likely have to overpay market to keep him considering the
ballpark and that they're an all-around incompetent organization
with a crappy team on the field, but at least that helps in
knowing what Gray thinks his market value is.
I'm very much in favor of the Cubs going after Gray this
offseason.
[quote]Nick Groke of The Athletic reports that Jon Gray rejected
a late-season contract extension offer from the Rockies of three
years and $35-40 million.
The Rockies chose to hang on to Gray at the trade deadline,
apparently in large part because they intended to ink him to a
long-term deal. However, the right-hander is now slated to reach
free agency after not biting on an offer which the Rockies
extend during their final homestand, per Groke. Colorado does
evidently plan to extend Gray a qualifying offer, which he seems
likely to reject.

By the way, I understand the Cubs being apprehensive about
signing a QO free agent, but I would hope keeping our second
round pick wouldn't be what stops us from going after someone
like Gray, Correa, Seager, etc. Guys who could be part of The
Next Great Cubs Team or possibly could be traded at some point
for contributors to TNGCT would be a lot more helpful than a
second round pick.

We aren’t going after Correa or Seager (the good one). Not
seriously.

Yeah that probably is some wishful thinking on my part there...

They absolutely will go after the bad one, though. Kyle Seager
is exactly the type of player they want. He won't actually help
the Cubs win much in 2022 but he's famous and is going to get a
"bargain" contract. Writers and blogs like Sharma and Bleacher
Nation can't wait to carry water for the Cubs on those kind of
moves--they're already parroting the company line that it's "not
the right time" to go out and sign someone like Correa.

Cubs 2nd rounders dating back to 1990:
Triantos***
Wild Burl
Chase Strumpf
Roederer, Richan, Davis***
Cory Abbott
Donnie Dewees
Jake Stinnett
Rob Zastryzny
Duane Underwood
Dan Vogelbach
Reggie Golden
David LeMahieu***
Aaron Shafer
Donald Veal
Grant Johnson
Brian Dopirak, Justin Jones
Andy Sisco
Bobby Hill
Michael "Winfield" Mallory
David Kelton, Jeff Goldbach
Quincy Carter
Brian McNichols
Brian Stephenson
Kevin Orie
Ryan Hawblitzel
*A lot of guys who we prospects-trackers liked a lot and who got
nice BA-reports for a while. *I am super hopeful for Triantos
as a pure hitter. And a lot of people like Brennan Davis and
expect him to be a useful major leaguer.
*But prior to DAvis, who futrure contribution is still
hypothetical, basically the cubs themselves have gotten almost
nothing out of 30 years of 2nd-round picks.
*Lemahieu obviously has gone on to a very productive career, but
Theo traded him for the immortal Ian Stewart. The Cubs
themselves got nothing for him.
*Maybe Vogelbach was the most useful 2nd-round pick to the Cubs,
because he was traded for Mike Montgomery who was useful for a
while, and who finished the World series for us?
*Or maybe Bobby Hill, because he was a key component in the
amazing Aramis Ramirez trade?
*Maybe Kevin Orie was actually the Cubs 2nd rounder who had the
longest and most productive career actually playing for the
Cubs, modest as that was? He had 1.5 WAR for the Cubs, so maybe
that's the most 2nd-round WAR we've gotten from a 1990-or-later
2nd-rounder?
*Obviously the failures of the past don't necessitate the
future. Hopefully in the next winning window, both Davis and
Triantos will be racking up more Cubs-WAR than all the rest of
those guys put together ever did over their entire Cubs careers!
*But yeah, given the history and the stats, I'm not sure I'd
make the loss of a 2nd-round pick a show-stopper for signing a
good free agent.

Quincy Carter was more help to University of Georgia football
than he was to us.
The Cubs also drafted a productive National Championship QB for
LSU in Matt Mauck the following year.

If I was Grey I’d take the QO and be unrestricted next year.
That is almost half/more than of what he was offered for a
multiple year deal.
