What were the Cubs SB numbers this season?
Does any site break them down by month? It seems like we ran a
lot more after the trade deadline than we did before, and my
impression was that we had pretty good success with
it...especially with Ortega and Happ…
Does any site break them down to eliminate CS numbers based on
silly double steals (especially 1st and 3rd) and such, and just
focus on straight steals? Or is that too much to ask?

Per baseball-reference...
1st half - 90 games - 46 SB, 21 CS
2nd half - 72 games - 40 SB, 16 CS
Sept/Oct - 29 games - 25 SB, 4 CS
Happ in Sept/Oct - 7 SB, 1 CS
Ortega in Sept/Oct - 4 SB, 1 CS
September was the best month of the season offensively, by
far...team OPS was .789

And given that Hoyer has done nothing yet to prove he's up to
the job, that holds little weight.
If the goal is to be competitive enough to sell tickets while
minimizing payroll, Ross makes sense. He's a company man,
loyal, and talks a good game in interviews.

While I can't answer your question, it inspired me to take a
look at the SB-CS records for Cub hitters. The following is a
list of season SB-CS for all the players, with the new guys and
Happ (who was 8-1 in SB-CS during August & September) in bold. I
think these numbers are all accurate, but if anyone finds
errors, please feel free to correct them. There is nothing
dispositive, to be sure, but it seems consistent with your
impression.

Ortega 12-6 (67%) (8-2 Aug/Sept; 4-4 prior)
Happ 9-2 (82%) (8-1 Aug/Sept; 1-1 prior)

Extending Ross is fine. The Cubs are going to be contenders
until 2023/24 anyway. He doesn’t seem to be an idiot and he
works well with the front office.

Is his contract up, or are they trying to add years to an
existing contract?
If his contract is up, I can't think of any reason not to
re-sign him. He seemed to get as much from his players as
anyone else could.

The Cubs have a club option to take him through 2023. Hoyer
wants to extend the contract beyond that season.

One thing that hasn’t really been discussed is Hoyer hiring a
GM. I believe he has said he is going outside the org to hire
someone. If he stays in the Theo tree the Dbacks org would be
really interesting. If he goes outside the Theo tree somebody
from the Rays/Dodgers tree would be at the top of my list.
