He definitely has more to learn at AAA...

I'm sure his baserunning could use a lot of improvement.

Joc and Nico need to save some for the regular season, by the
way.

Strumpf drilled a pretty long HR in the 7th.
I'm no scout, but just looking I can see kinda why he looks good
as a hitting prospect.
-Looks to have a really well-balance stance and weight-shift.
-seems selective, took a pitch or two that didn't miss by much.
-Pretty short direct swing.
So just kind of had the look of a balanced, efficient swing that
many professional hitters have.
Whether he can actually hit velocity or hit pitches with
movement, we'll see. The HR was on a hanging breaking ball, a
pretty bad pitch. On an earlier pitch, I thought there seemed
to be a fastball not in a good pitcher's spot, that seemed
pretty hittable, and Chase just fouled that one off.
But yeah, looked balanced. I'll be really curious to see how
well he hits in full-season ball. He didn't seem very built.
Looked to perhaps have solid legs, but upper body and arms
didn't seem real muscled up. Hoerner seems bigger and stronger
this spring. I'm wondering whether Strumpf will have a summer
to try to hit for hitting. But them might show up next year
built up more and with some added strength.

Spring stats mean squat. If the AAA season were starting on
time it'd still be a slam-dunk to send Hoerner there and see how
it does. Since it's not, maybe you keep him and hope this isn't
a mirage.

I couldn’t care less about his spring stats. He has nothing to
learn at AAA. He’s ready.

Long-time Cubs radio voice Pat Hughes will make his Marquee
Sports Network debut this week, doing play-by-play for the
Friday (vs. Brewers) and Sunday (vs. Angels) broadcasts. -

Based on what, if not his spring stats?

Has been noted on the broadcasts that Hoerner looks completely
different physically than a year ago.
Way stronger—-and it shows on his swings and how he is impacting
the baseball.
The results so far are nice but it’s much more than that. He
really looks like he’s going to have extra-base pop NOW and what
else was there that he needed work on? His 2B defense was
already outstanding. He already has good contact skills. Appears
to be very mature on the field with good demeanor.
Think the spring battle is between Vargas and Sogard for an IF
utility spot behind Hoerner.

The eye test? OK, at least it's an answer.
Listen, the Cubs are going nowhere this season and Hoerner is
one of the few guys likely to make the opening day roster who
isn't on the trading block, so maybe it makes sense to just run
him out there and hope for the best. But he's still a guy who
never dominated in the minors and has abjectly stunk in the
majors, and inflated Cactus numbers and how nicely he fills out
a uniform now won't change that. Keep him with the big club and
it's a gamble. Arguably justified, but a gamble.
