Maples is one of a kind. Came within one strike of a nine
pitch, 3 K inning. Then a HBP and a run-scoring double.
Followed by the third K on an insane slider that hit the batter
but was so good that the guy swung at it.
You have to take him north. If for no other reason than the
theater.

Maples inning. K'd first two guy on 6 pitches. Maybe 4 were
strikes, two chase pitches. 0-2 on 3rd guy, then throws a big
breaker that isn't close and hits him on foot.
2-1 on lefty, throws a fastball that got hammered.
Got 2-2 on next guy, hit guy dead on the thigh but guy trying to
twist away got called for strikeout.

Those first eight strikes: no fouls either.
5 called strikes and 3 swinging strikes. Could have been a
Special Immaculate Inning with no touches.
Yeah, you have to take him to opening day and see what happens.

Keegan Thompson gives up a seeing-eye ground-ball single.
Strumpf did not look very quick or rangy at 2b, I was surprised
the ball got through. Got to 2-strikes on next hitter, but
didn't throw a good putaway pitch, and guy kind of looped a
single over the infield. Threw a curve that bounced about 8
feet in front of the plate, 2nd/3rd no outs. Then struck out
the next three batters.
Thompson looked pretty composed and kinda fit the profile of a
guy who maybe kinda knows what he's doing. Looked to hae good
balance. Missed some fastballs a little low, but was working
some up fastballs and some down fastballs, and what looked like
a couple of breaking-ball variants. Kinda looks like a guy who,
if he could get into a better groove and locate a little better,
might become a good craftsman guy. Didn't look overwhelming,
but without a gun didn't look like his fastball was too slow to
use. Think he's got a chance. But will need to be able to
locate his breaking stuff pretty well, and locate both the up
and the down fastballs. May not be as sharp yet as he might be
as the spring and the season progresses?

The Cubs retired 27 batters today, 16 by strikeout. K'd 39% of
the batters they faced.

Gave up a deep drive and a sharp foul ball. Deep one seemed to
be a hanging breaking ball. Foul maybe another? K'd the final
batter on a sharp breaking ball within the zone, looked really
good. Bounced a couple of others.
