I'm convinced everything that happened since is punishment for
the Cubs and Leicester City in 2016. The universe just doesn't
allow stuff like that to happen. Watson never makes the putt on
       18.

So who suspects Anthony Rizzo's days are numbered?
There's just too many variables when it comes to this offseason
       to make a guess.
Part of me thinks right now is the perfect time to blow it up
       and start over.

I'm kinda guessing they won't blow it up.
Covid interferes. In normal rebuild, you trade veterans for
prospects. Sell to buyers. But will there be any buyers? With
every team having lost >>$100M, and at risk of losing >$100M
more next season, their will be few buyers for big-contracts.
In a normal year, there would be very strong demand for Darvish
and you could net some good prospects. Even in a normal year,
not sure 1 year of expiring Bryant-Rizzo at $18.6-$16.5 would
net more than a B-type prospect, but you'd be able to trade them
and get at least somebody with major-league potential. Now?
Will anybody even accept those contracts, much less sacrifice
cheap young talent to take on additional payroll burden?
Think it's going to be really hard to get even a fraction of
what used to be normal price-in-prospects.
Blowing it up also mismatches Theo expiring. That's more a
thing new management could elect to do?
Hard to imagine that Theo is going to want to spend his last
winter releasing everybody and aiming for a tank season. In his
press conference, he still talked with pride about having won
the division and gotten into the playoffs; about his players as
having histories as consistently good hitters; as good proven
       hitters who had unexpectedly unsuccessful seasons offensively;
about how hard Covid was on players; about how unsure what
conclusions to draw from the Covid season; about how the good
hitters are all in their prime ages. (He's right, it's not like
Baez and Bryant and Schwarber and Contreras and Rizzo are at
ages where they should be washed up and in age-based decline, or
anything.). So given that the market won't be offering much to
buy his contracts, I expect he'll take another run at it with
largely the same core, one more time. With expanded playoffs
and over half the teams getting in, you don't actually need to
be good to get in, average is sufficient. So I expect Theo will
take another run at a weak division and the expanded playoffs,
and if they get spanked in the playoffs, so be it.

There won't be much of a trade return for a high prices player
this winter. Also, I think that there won't be very many high
priced multi year free agent deals this winter. I suspect many
of the top free agents, especially those on the far side of 30,
will have to go with a one year contract just to make it through
to next winter, when the free agent market should be back to
       normal.

Nothing official there yet, but don't expect a surprise there.
They'll pick up Rizzo's option and decline Descalso's.

They claimed Max Schrock off waivers from the Cardinals as well.
