on the radio. I think the writing was on the wall this year that
Marquee wants to take broadcasts in a different direction going
forward. They never really seemed to buy into JD, and it felt
like Dempster or (less likely) Grace was being groomed to
replace him. Radio may be something Len wants to try out, but I
also think he might not want to work at Marquee long term. If I
had to guess, I'd expect him to be back in a more lucrative TV
       role within a couple seasons.

be surprising if he just moves to ESPN full time when his White
Sox contract is up. Maybe Len will be calling games on TV for
       them within year or two.

Steve Stone is 73 so how long he'll be around is questionable.

Len might have considered having what amounted to a second color
analyst in the booth like Dempster or Grace and sideline
reporters like Kelly Crull (I still miss her) and Doug Glanville
as unnecessary distractions. On the other hand, I won't miss
all the talk about bands and songs I never heard of.

Cubs TV boss says plenty of people inquiring about their now
open play-by-play job. Just beginning the process, he says.

Hopefully they can find someone more exciting than Chris Myers.

I grew up listening to Vin Scully on the radio doing games ALONE
(except for a partner doing the middle innings also alone) and
there’s no comparison between radio and tv in terms of the
relationship to the audience for a top-flight announcer. Like so
many other kids in L.A., I learned the game from Scully. A
special bond. (I know folks who feel that about Harwell in
Detroit and Harry’s great peak years were on KMOX radio in St.
Louis). Even then, Scully worked Dodgers AT Giants on tv (the
only games Dodgers televised back then) and was no comparison to
Scully on radio. He let the visuals “call” most of the action on
tv—-something too many blathering tv guys today don’t
       understand.
As a professional keenly attuned to his trade’s history, I’m
sure that Kasper is very aware of this kind of relationship and
this history of the great radio baseball announcers. It’s kind
of an old-fashioned notion these days but I’m very impressed
that Kasper wanted to do this—-although will miss him a whole
       lot.
Hoping that Cubs don’t hire someone annoying to replace him.

Jack Quinlan was the best I ever heard.

I understood at the time, but it kind of looks as if things
started to go sour for the Cubs when they let Fowler walk after
the WS. They've needed a bat like his ever since for starters
(and never found it), but he seemed to offer something extra to
the mix that they've desperately missed.

Jack Quinlan was outstanding. But I think that Pat Hughes is
even better. The best I have ever heard on the radio.
