Bleacher Nation speculates on another potential Bryant target:
Andrew Benintendi. IMO, that seems more realistic than Robles
just because Benintendi is so much closer to free agency. I
could see the Red Sox being willing to take the chance that they
could get one All Star year out of Bryant rather than two good
years out of Benintendi, but I'm more doubtful the Nationals
would be willing to potentially give up 4 years of Robles.

I very much agree. Unfortunately, it seems certain that Bryant
will not be a Cub after 2001, and it's my impression that no one
knows what, if any, compensation the Cubs would receive if he
leaves as a free agent. Given that, it seems to make the most
sense to get the best deal they can for him before the 2021
season, if possible.

Or you could wait until the trade deadline instead of taking
another teams crap. Teams might have fans and more money then.
Who knows maybe the Cubs could be good and sign him to an
extension.
Benintendi contact% in 2019 was 77% vs Bryant’s 74%, so he
doesn’t help contact. He also has a wRC+ of 85 career vs lefties
so he hurts the Cubs there. Benintendi’s shortened 2020 had a
contact percentage of 68%.

Options:
1. Don't tender him, unload the ~$18M commitment, and *if* you
have that kind of cash to spend, invest it on other talent.
2. Tender him, pay the $$, keep him all year, hope he helps you
win this year, and worry about 2022 later.
3. Tender him, pay the $$, keep him all year, and try to pay
what the market demands to resign him as a FA.
4. Tender him, and trade him for whatever you can get
off-season in exchange for an ~$18/1 contract of his caliber.
5. Tender him, and see what the market will offer mid-season.
As Blue blue notes, it might actually be a lot better as a
2-month rental mid-season than it is now, if he's having a good
season? (A team with pennant fever is sometimes willing to
overpay? Perhaps at mid-season a team with pennant-fever might
also be positioned to extend him?).
6. Tender and trade, receiving a contract in return.
#1: The Heyman report suggests #1 isn't going to be the Cubs
choice, but that's still a rumor.
#2: I don't really see #2, just keeping him, resulting in a WS
this season. I don't think we've got the talent for that, even
if Bryant was to produce a strong season.
#3: But they may well want to try. And next off-season they
may have as much need for a good-hitting 3B as will any other
big-market $$-team. His FA salary next winter may not approach
what Bryant and Boras wanted last winter. So it may be that
keeping him, and either extending or trying, will make more
sense than trading him for not much.
#4: I don't really believe a trade now will bring back a lot.
I don't think the market is that hungry enough for an $18/1
contract, to both take on that level of salary plus trade
precious prospects for the contract. But something is better
than nothing, of course.
#5: A mid-season trade might make sense. If he's having a good
season, buyers might be interested in a short-term rental.
#6: If you traded him and got a contract back, the financial
hit to the buyer would be variably less than $18. Perhaps you
could get a roster-filler back and a better prospect that way?

#2. Getting to the playoffs should be a goal. It might have
fans and bring in cash for 2022. The division is crap and if
you get in the playoffs maybe Bryant, Baez, Rizzo get hot and
you can ride Darvish, Hendricks and good things happen. You
don't always need to be the best team.
#5 I think that gets you best prospect if end up wanting to
trade him.
#6 I would take a decent amount of cash to get a prospect that
would matter and that gets rid of the "benefit" of trading
Bryant, ie saving money.

tender Schwarber and Almora.

Two of the three main pillars in the most important run in Cubs’
history non-tendered on the same day. Probably inevitable
business decisions given the current ownership and climate, but
still an incredibly sad moment for the franchise.

The Schwarber non-tender isn't official yet, FWIW. Nightengale
is just reporting what he's heard. It's possible that it'll
happen (maybe probable given that Rosario was already been
non-tendered), but it's not a done deal yet.
Almora isn't a done deal either, but it's obvious that it'll
happen.
