For those not watching, Jharel Cotton flashed a really nice
       straight change today...

Mills and Megill also looked pretty good today. As a winter
draftee, they have to keep him on the roster all season. It
would be nice if he performed well enough to keep.

I read somewhere that the Cubs have liked Megill for a while and
tried to trade for him before.

Arizona Phil had Megill 95-97 today. That is a big jump from his
first appearance and from last year as well.

Watched some of the innings for Cubs pitchers from today and
yesterday. Cotton's change was really effective. Most of his
stuff seemed to have a lot of movement, interesting. Some of
his misses missed pretty badly. He touched 90 on one pitch,
maybe twice, otherwise certainly nothing over 90 today, on the
mlb-broadcast. That said, I'm not sure whether the couple of
90's were actual fastballs, or what the intent was. Looks
interesting, although is he's a pure breaking-ball guy, that
seems much better suited to relief than rotation.
Megill looked pretty smooth with his fastball; some of his
breaking balls missed pretty badly. Maybe one fastball up at 94
or 95, the rest in the 90-92 range, so not overpoweringly fast
or anything, at least today. But he kinda looked like he might
throw mid 90's fairly easily if he wanted to or the adrenaline
was pumping. His breaking stuff looked pretty difficult to hit,
although lots of them missed pretty badly. But he got some bad
chase swings on breaking balls where the hitters seeemed to be
guessing fastball. Not sure if that's a delivery where the
breaking stuff is hard to read, or if it's just minor-league
hitters early in camp missing badly. Looked like *if*he could
control his breaking stuff, he might be pretty interesting.
Mills looked very smooth. And he touched 90-91. So he's got
the rep as being a low-velocity guy, and obviously 90-91 isn't
fast. But not seeing many other guys much faster than that very
often; he looked smooth and like a pro, when he missed it looked
like he didn't miss his spots by more than a little.
I watched Brothers from yesterday. as Blue noted, he had a
couple 94-95-ish readings, and his breaking ball looked like a
weapon. He didn't look like a wildman, seemed like the ball was
around the plate and if there were misses, he wasn't missing
badly. That's kinda how I thought Alzolay looked too, some of
his pitches were balls, but they were all close and missed by
       very little.
Watched Tyson Miller from yesterday's game. He threw a lot of
breaking balls, and they all seemed to be around the plate, not
nearly as many not-even-close as with Cotton and Megill.
Fastball touched 89, maybe touched 90 once.
DelaCruz was also predominantly breaking stuff. His breaking
stuff seemed to be around the zone. Fastball maybe touched 92.
Not overpowering velocity, at least today. But seemed to have a
variety of pitches he could keep around the plate.
I watched Mekkes, maybe from yesterday's game or the day before?
My recall from reports was that while scouts have said his
fastball was effective and deceptive, release point and all, but
that he wasn't actually actually fast. His control wasn't real
sharp, long counts. But his fastball was up around 94, kind of
repeatedly, looked easy, like he didn't need to muscle up for
that velocity. Looked like if I read a report next week that he
was feeling good and was letting it rip, it wouldn't surprise if
he had some 98's or something. His breaking ball looked good, I
thought. I thought he looked like a very realistic possibility,
but he ran a lot of long counts, and had a lot of pitches that
were close but just missed. Looked interesting, not overly
       complicated.

My velocity notes were just mlb-tv listings. Maybe missed, but
mlb didn't seem to flash any 97.

I’m not sure where Arizona Phil is getting his readings and if
Marquee is using StatCast or something else. My understanding
was that Marquee wasn’t going to give velocity reading during
       the Spring.
