That would be a big deal if he could be an asset this year. I
guess hoping for a Chatwood turnaround is like hoping for a
Heyward one, but there's a nonzero chance the light bulb might
       go on for him.

I'm not sure how that can be a vexing question. Right now they
have Lester, Darvish, Hendricks, Hamels and Quintana as
starters. Almost everyone seems to feel that at LEAST one, and
perhaps more will have problems, either due to injury or old
age. If Chatwood has cured his control problems, either he or
one of the above will replace Montgomery as the
reliever/swingman. And if all six are doing well by July, one
of them could bring back pretty good return in a trade. I wish
the Cubs had been faced with such vexing problems over all of
the 60 odd years I have followed them.

But it does force the vexing question of just what the heck you
do with him once the season starts.[/quote]
A good Chatwood would be a great asset in the pen. And there is
space for him there. An effective Chatwood would be a huge
boost in the pen. And I still think a guy who could sometimes
extend and pitch two innings instead of just one would be pretty
       fun and helpful in pen.

I have a feeling he needs to pitch a lot to be effective. An
occasional appearance out of the pen for a pitcher who can be
wild can be disastrous. It seems to me that when Joe sat him
for a week and then brought him, he was REALLY terrible.

Yeah, that's a good point, and might totally be the case. This
being spring training and me being hopeful and optimistic: a
flip is that if you're not in the top group of relievers, then
*IF* you're pitching well, you can get a lot of work. Pitch the
6th inning of winning games, get used in games when you're
losing. And you wouldn't need to sit for 5 days stressing about
things, you get lots of appearances. I think sometimes easier
for a reliever to stay grooved in pitching every 2nd or 3rd day
       than going 5 days off?

Right now he is insurance in case any of the 5 has an owie
heading into the season. Can always happen. Up until then, he
doesn't have to impress Joe or us. He has to impress some GM
out there looking for a pitcher.

That’s essentially my concern. Even if Chatwood is fixed there’s
no precedent to show he can be effective as an occasional
       reliever.
The attractiveness of finding a taker for him is a lot less now
that all it would mean is padding the Rickettses profit margin.
