Going strictly on what I've read, I do hope that Bubba Starling
somehow falls to be available when the Cubs draft. I gather
that's very unlikely though.
I assume that the reluctance toward Springer is his Ks, though
they are apparently well down this year (one source said 16% and
another said 12% I think) and the "long" swing. I don't get the
impression there is anything else not to like.
I asked this before, but I don't think there was much if any
response. Given that others here have followed the players in
the draft far more than I, I'm curious who is each person's
choice here - given reality (in other words, not guys like Cole,
Rendon and Hultzen who are consensus picks long before the Cubs
select).

Most picks, even those which are conventional wisdom picks, end
up being flops.

Springer is K'ing 16% of his AB's this year after K'ing 25% each
of his first two years.
Oddly though, the rest of his stats are down.

It shouldn't have anything to do with strike outs, but the lower
numbers could be related to the composite bats being used this
year.

So, let me ask this, anybody willing to give me your top 3-5
guys you want the Cubs to pick in round one - guys who have a
reasonable chance of being there.

Ron - I can't answer you because truthfully, I have absolutely
no basis to form an opinion. I have never seen any of the
prospects play, and I believe that judging a high school or
college player based upon his statistics is worthless.
I do have opinions on what positions should be prioritized. I
hope they go after a player that has both power and a reputation
for good defense, preferably an outfielder, and preferably a
college player. But I still lean towards the "best player
available" concept. If there is a pitcher and an outfielder on
the board that are rated equally, go for the outfielder. But if
the best player by far is a pitcher, then take him and worry
about the outfield in later rounds.
I lean towards college players rather than high school players
(all things being equal) because so many high school prospects
flame out. When projecting a high school player, in addition to
everything else, you have to project what kind of player he will
be when (IF) he gains 40 pounds and grows 3 inches. Sometimes
it adds power. Sometimes it reduces coordination. There are
less variables in college players.
But as far as individuals are concerned, forming strong opinions
with the little information we have is rather worthless.

That not only doesn't discourage many folks, reminding them of
how little they know in forming the opinion they hold with
absolute certainty greatly irritates a lot of them.

Personally I like the idea of signing Bubba Sterling... just
because you have to love that first name...
