I would be very surprised if there was not a rather large drop
in the 2012 salary budget, regardless of how we do for the rest
of the year. I find it hard to believe that the Cubs will be
big players in the free agent market this winter, certainly not
to the extent that they spend the 50 million or so that comes
off the books.
I think the best we can hope for is that they spend 20 million
per year or so on Fielder for three years, and add a few million
to the draft and international market.
Ricketts must reduce the debt he is carrying. And unlike
Congress, he isn't either crazy or irresponsible.
Out of curiosity, how much does come off the books this year.
15 or so for Fukudome, 16 or so for Ramirez. 10 for Pena. How
much is Dempster, 12 or so? Grabow also leaves.

Don't assume Hendry doesn't pick up A-Ram's option. He's a
loyalty guy.

He's not paying Ramirez $16M after the season Ramirez is having.

Dempster has a player option for 2012 ($14 million), so the Cubs
won't be saving any money on him.

Here's CurtOne's BS pick in his latest mocking draft:
Harold Streeter, North Dakota State School of Mines, relief
pitcher. Extremely high ceiling if it weren't for his five
Tommy John surgeries. Once got out of an inning with only six
runs scored.

I have no idea how accurate it is, but this comparison between
Springer and Mahtook claims that Springer's K rate this year is
down to 16%. That may or may not represent a real change.
All things considered, Mahtook has the more appealing track
record for two big reasons: competition and contact. The SEC is
a more competitive conference than the Big East. And meanwhile,
Springer’s had considerable difficulty avoiding the strikeout.
In 2010, Mahtook had his worst season strikeout-wise, striking
out in 22.6% of his at-bats. That’s small potatoes next to
Springer, whose figure was 28.8%. Both men have improved their
numbers to the 16% range with Springer a hair better, but the
track record does say something, especially considering the fact
that Mahtook is probably facing better pitching.

The big difference is not the level of responsibility or sanity,
but access to a printing press.

And if what I wrote suggested I disagree with what you wrote
above, Craig, it was poor writing on my part. The point I was
trying to make is that two criticisms we often see here are
directly at odds with each other and can not both be true -- one
that the Cubs have been foolishly cheap with their draft budgets
and have failed to allow enough money to take the best talent
available, and the other that Hendry has had free reign to
acquire young talent and has done a terrible job in picking that
talent.
If Hendry has not had the budget available, then that is a fault
over which he has had little to no control, and the second of
those two criticisms is not valid. If he has had reasonable
budgets, then the first of those two is not valid.
That is the only point I was trying to make, and hopefully I
have done better explaining it this time.

Rivals' latest mock has the Cubs going with Springer, but it's
quite a different order than what BA has.

Jonathan Mayo's latest mock has the Cubs taking Archie Bradley.
Bradley, Springer and Starling are the names seemingly most
associated with the Cubs rumor-wise. Surprised none of the
college pitchers ever get mentioned.

Springer is the one guy i really hope they don't take...i can
live with most of the others...think i'd prefer Bubba Starling
out of everyone, but if they did end up with Mahtook, being an
lsu guy, i'd root for him like there's no tomorrow. Dont wanta
see Bradley cuz of Boras...He's gonna want an insane amount of
money, and i could see him going to college pretty easily.
I do prefer a bat drafting this high. He may flame out, but i
at least don't have to wait for the inevitable arm or shoulder
injury--unless its just someone too good to pass up. i'd
actually like to take a bat with the first 2-3 picks, and then
switch to pitching or pitching/hitting combo. I've always
thought that was the best strategy because of the
unpredictability of pitching and injuries...though i do love a
slam dunk rotation.
