Closers commonly pitch in tie games AT HOME, not so much on the
road.
Game tied at home after eight innings--by definition home team
can't get a save situation for the closer. Road is different.
Usage dramatically different home and road, when tied.
Oh didn't pitch two innings--brought in with one out in eighth
with one-run lead, with go-ahead run on base. Everybody is well
rested on opening day. Not a big deal. Cubs were never remotely
in a similar situation re. possible W. Davis use. Apples and
oranges.

Koji Uehara had career 522 strikeouts in 437.2 innings going
into Sunday night in St. Louis where he faced five batters and
did not fan anybody. I may have missed one but it seemed like
there weren’t even any swings and misses.
One of the baseball “givens” is a pitcher switching leagues has
the advantage over hitters who have not seen him. The Red Sox
may have known what they were doing when they let him go to free
agency.
I’m going to write last night off to a small sample size and
hope he turns it around.

An even bigger problem is with Bryant. After last night's game,
he is on a pace to strike out 486 times. Granted, you expect a
power hitter to strike out more than the average player, but
this seems to me to be excessive, if he doesn't come around
soon.

Inexcusable! Ship that character out while he still has value!
How long are we going to tolerate this incompetence by Theo and
this braindead Maddon and his pitching choices and stupid
lineups? Now we've blown our shot at a perfect season. Screw
this team. Back up the truck!

Man, I may have to skip watching Lester games. Its painful to
watch and hear the announcers talking about his inability to
throw to any base but home. Its entirely frustrating and
enormous problem.

I thought it was weird that the Cardinals spent $30 million on a
reliever and didn't trust him to get three outs. Using closers
for multiple innings, unless they are elite, is a bad idea in my
book.

According to Reb it's perfectly normal.

It's certainly a problem but I don't know how enormous it is.
Quite frankly, broadcasters who harp on it are being lazy. There
are a lot of other story lines to talk about with Lester. The
guy has overcome cancer and pitched the Red Sox and Cubs to
World Series wins. Every time a runner gets on they harp on it
and yet how many times last year did it cost Lester a game? How
many times did it cost him a run? He had the best stats of his
career last year with his "enormous" problem so excuse me if I
yawn.

I agree with reb, I didn't see anything weird about it. Oh is
very well rested, and there's no game next day. He's been a
multi-inning guy all his life. No problem with him warming up
to pitch a second inning and extend him beyond ~7 pitches for
the night.
Back in the 8th, it's 1-0 bases-loaded with the game on the
line, Rosenthal missing, and RH-Kris Bryant coming up. No
manager brings in lefty Cecil to pitch to Bryant there, an
obvious situation for your best RH reliever.

Looked at some Oh stats. He's faced the 9 times, 4 times have
been for 4 outs or more. He's gone more than 4 outs 11 times in
69 games. He's given up 23 runs in the majors, 9 to the Cubs.
He has a 5.78 R/9 against the Cubs and 1.91 R/9 against the rest
of the league.
