I don't think the Cubs have had a single pitcher tonight whose
command has been on. The Cardinals really should've won this
one in a blowout.

Interesting contrast. Matheny burns his closer for 38 pitches
on opening day, and Joe declines to go to his in a tie game on
the road.
I think the fact that Rondon never got into the game in the 9th
speaks ill of the confidence level Maddon has in him.

Yeah, that's the difference between (a) a save situation and (b)
a non-save situation.

Yes, it's totally normal for a manager to use his closer for two
innings and almost 40 pitches on the first day of the season.
As for the whol "save situation" trope, it's not as if there
aren't many managers these days who don't feel bound to it.
Closers pitch in tie games on the road all the time - Maddon
just chose not to do it here.
