The Cubs have declined their option on Jason Hammel. Very, very
surprising to me - even if you didn't intend to use him in 2017,
I would have thought at that cost he was a trade asset.

Wow. Are there medical reports on him which we haven't heard
about?

I was surprised too, but the Cubs released a statement that
makes it sound like they had a handshake agreement not to pick
up the option unless they were going to bring him back (see
second to last paragraph below). Hammel wasn't going to bring
back an elite prospect anyway, so it was probably a good idea to
honor their handshake agreement.
This is really good for Hammel. With the free agent market the
way it is, it seems like he should get a 3-4 year deal worth
about $10-$12 million per year.

Thanks. There used to be a more obvious way to do it. I'll go
read and update.

I'm guessing Mike Montgomery took Hammel's spot and we intend to
upgrade the bullpen enough to offset taking MM out of it.

I think that's one possibility. I think the front office will
have no problem if that's how the offseason ends.
But I think they'll also be involved in markets for Sale,
Quintana, and/or Archer if they become available. And with the
MLB depth the Cubs have, it wouldn't shock me to see them get a
deal for one of those guys done.

Rogers wrote that a source said the Cubs have Hammel the option
to decide if he wanted to be a Cub next year or test free agency
and Hammel choose free agency.
I think it makes sense for both parties to move on and the Cubs
may get bonus points with free agents by handling it that way.
I've been catching up on podcasts and it was either Longerhagen
or Cameron and they were convinced the Cubs would trade for a
starter.

I'd go after a #2/3 type starter. Don't know who.
