If Levine is correct about interest in Jankowski, Padres also
have reliever(s) Cubs figure to be interested in.
We talked about Brad Hand here during last trade deadline--might
be a good lefty replacement for Travis Wood, although Padres
worked him very hard in 2016. Was a waiver pick-up for them.
       Pitched in 82 games.
Then there's Carter Capps coming back from TJ last March. Pretty
nasty when healthy. Iffy, like any TJ-returning guy. Padres got
       him in Cashner deal.
I suppose Cubs would want to get a SP in any Soler deal, so
probably not going here--although Pads a bit thin in corner
OFers. (Doubt Cubs would be interested in Tyson Ross at this
       point given his issues).
No clue who Cubs would also give up but logical that Szczur goes
back to Padres as a piece in a Jankowski deal--he might have a
regular gig there as a platoon LFer with Alex Dickerson.

I don't understand why the Cubs need to trade for a weak
left-handed hitting CF. Don't they already have one?

I would say because there's a substantial chance Almora will be
awful against RHP, and the Cubs want to have the option to use
Heyward prinarily in RF with a legit defensive CF if that's the
       way things break.

If Almora is going to be awful during the majority of the games
then what the Cubs need is starting CF. Not a LH-- slightly
less than awful--hitting, decent glove--part time CF.
If the Cubs decide they can't/won't afford a starting CF then
they already have a LH-- slightly less than awful (fingers
       crossed)--hitting, decent glove--part time CF.

It will probably depend heavily on other roster moves before
       opening day.
Last year at this time I was confident Baez would get in at
least 30 games in CF, and was the odds on favorite to be the
primary CFer during this past season. Signing Fowler sort of
changed that. Before becoming too confident of how Heyward will
be used next season, it might be a good idea to know what the
roster will look like. If he is the best option for playing
there, he will likely get a good deal of time there. If there
are better options, he likely will not. My expectation at the
moment is for Almora to get more than 130 starts in CF.

Don't think a guy like Jankowski has much of anything to do with
       Heyward.
First, if Cubs had plans to play Heyward much in CF, Theo
wouldn't be talking about finding a complementary player for
Almora. Put another way, Almora and "the new guy" are going to
       be in CF---not Heyward.
Second, Cubs don't really have a player like Jankowski--a speed
guy who can steal a base, draw a walk, and play outstanding CF
defense. It's a package not currently on roster. Szczur doesn't
really do all this and, in any case, isn't a platoon fit with
       Almora.

You're not going to get everything you want. If they want the
guy you describe, they can re-sign Fowler. Otherwise a player
like Jankowski makes a lot of sense. Getting out of Petco and
playing exclusively in a platoon, he could easily be in the
.740-740 OPS range. His BB rate is way up. He's better than
decent with the glove - he's outstanding. And he's a legit
40-50 SB guy if he were playing every day.

Economics require compromise. I'm not advocating resigning
       Fowler to a big contract.
I realize you won't get everything you want. But if a light
hitting, good fielding, LH CF is what you decide you want, my
only point is that you don't need to trade for one. Heyward
could get the majority of starts in CF with Almora playing
against LHP and late inning defense. Heyward would also get
late inning defense in RF. This would free up more AB for
Zobrist, Schwarber, and Soler (if he's still around). (And
don't forget the MAD(don) Scientist will inevitably give Bryant
and Contreras some innings in the OF.)
Of course, if they have already decided Soler wont be around...

I posted a John Sickels Top 20 in "On the Farm" and that brings
to mind a question. Do the Cubs "have" to trade Zagunis and
Candelario this offseason to avoid the risk of having them
       plateau and lose value?
       Discuss.
