Man, isn't it nice to have a front office that we respect and
trust? The outfield is such a complex equation, it beats my
brain. I'm fine with going any of a million different ways out
there, myself. But it is such a relief to just be able to
assume and trust that whatever decisions get made there, that
management will have thought it through very well. Whether
their outfield construction works out great or not, we'll still
trust that "the process" for thinking it through will have been
excellent, probably better than I could think of. After going
through my Cub life with Jim Frey and Ed Lynch and Don Baylor
and Hendry/Fleita making so many of the decisions, it's weird to
just trust that whatever plan gets laid out, that it's as good
and smart as resources allow.
I hadn't even thought of Rasmus as a player for CF, and doubt he
ends up being the guy. But Dave, if they do acquire a LH CFer,
that guy will certainly have the opportunity to be much more
than "a fifth outfielder". If a LH CFer produces and plays
well, that guy could at least have the opportunity to compete to
become a primary starter. So I'm not sure assuming a guy's
going to be sulking because he's boxed into 5th-OFer-only, that
may be less true than we think.

Braves fans seem to think he is part of the future. Inciarte is
sometimes brought up in trades, but I'm not sure what he'd cost
and how much of an upgrade he'd be over Almora.

Hearing reason #Cubs released RHP Spencer Patton is so he can
pursue an opportunity in Japan.

With Craig on this. If we got Rasmus (we won't) he'd likely get
many more ABs than Almora. Any similarly established LH option
would.
As for Inciarte, he's certainly an upgrade on Almora. And he
certainly wouldn't come cheap. His offense is quite
respectable, and he's beyond elite defensively.

You've had a man crush on Inciarte for a while now Deeg.
I think Almora's our CFer and unless a trade is made we won't be
adding an OFer of much significance.

Inciarte has 12.7 rWAR in 381 career games so far--about 2 1/2
seasons worth of games. Do the math. That's a lot of WAR value
per season.
If Almora is similar WAR value to Inciarte, great for the Cubs.
Don't think Theo would be talking about bringing in a lefty CFer
if he thought Almora was going to approach that in 2017.
Obviously, Theo not anticipating that.
Braves might trade Inciarte (because of Mallix Smith) but cost
will be high and Cubs probably not going to spend their trade
capital on non-pitching--although Inciarte-on-Cubs would be huge
for run prevention.

reb and deeg get a strong ITYS on Inciarte!
Speaking of Inciarte, and trying to get controlled pitching,
would Shelby Miller be of any interest? Controllable pitcher;
has his market come down to where he might be an interesting
pickup, whether as a reliever or as rotation depth option?
(I don't know if his arm was shot, or if he's a head case, or
whatever, just came to mind because of INciarte's mention.)

I'd take a chance on Miller.
