this year, so they're probably much better off just holding him
until the deadline. And if the A's are willing to sell low,
then I think that has to be interpreted as a red flag that the
A's think his arm is shot.

My right price and the A's right price are likely very
different, so I'd agree with that.

Odorizzi. Smyly is kind of in the same boat as Gray--his value
is way down after a bad season. And I don't know if there are
any teams really have both a strong enough need for a starter
and the prospects Tampa will want to actually get Archer. I
would've expected Odorizzi to be the most likely trade
candidate--as a steady mid-rotation starter in the current
market, it's hard to imagine his value ever being higher.

Smyly I want no part of. Bad shoulder and fly ball pitcher.
Colome would likely cost a ton. He's pre-arb, so the Rays don't
have a ton of reason to trade him.

I agree on Smyly. I don't see much appealing about him at this
point. As long as we're talking Rays, I'm also not interested
in Cobb at all. Archer is probably a pipe dream. If the Rays
are definitely going to trade a starter, Odorizzi is the only
one that I see that might really fit with the Cubs.
There was that rumor a week or so ago that the Cubs were more
interested in finding the next ace closer rather than paying for
Chapman/Jansen/Melancon. So even at a high price, I wonder if
Colome might be a guy the front office will go after.

I'd certainly be interested in Cobb if the Rays are giving him
away cheap. Before TJS he was a damn good pitcher.

I'm guessing that having broken through and won the World Series
this year, Theo & Jed will be reluctant to be as "nowacrat" as
they would have been otherwise. They've always emphasized the
long view, and now they are, arguably, under less pressure to
focus on the immediate term . If so, it would make sense to
avoid investing what it would cost in dollars and years for
someone like Chapman (whose arm could get blown out) and,
instead (1) save funds for locking up their own young stars over
the coming years and (2) pursue guys they see as lower cost who
have the potential to develop into core pitchers, whether in the
rotation or bullpen.

Cobb would be interesting buy low. The downside is he only has
1 year of control left.
On Colome I'm not sure he's worth the price. He has 1 year of
being a good closer. He has a history of shoulder and arm
injuries, but no surgeries. I'm not sure he is better than
Rondon if Rondon is healthy.

That may also be an upside, in some ways. If he shows well
enough, you can QO him and either get another year of control or
a draft pick, depending on the changes that might be made to the
QO system. If he's garbage/injured, you're not on the hook long
term.

True. The rumors of the QO is that a team won't lose pick for
signing a FA, but that the losing team will get a pick.

Rollins got a 80-game suspension in 2015 for PEDs.
Three-pitch mix--sinker, slider, change-up guy.
By the way, today is deadline for adding guys to the 40-man.
Figure to see some Cubs moves later today.
