Buster says A's "actively listening to offers" for Sonny Gray.
Gray was a topic of conversation here last season. Don't recall
how much interest there was but guessing Theo would have an
interest in Gray if A's ready to move him.
A's in dire need for OFers, so Soler fits there---assuming Beane
likes him. Think Candelario fits there too, as a 1B. Not so
much 3B. What else?

I was one of the bigger critics of Gray being a TORP, but I
wouldn't be opposed to trading for him for the right price. I
just think it would be difficult for the Cubs to pull off. NSBB
mentioned targeting somebody like Wisler from the abrahes or
Butler from the Rockies, which I think would be interesting.
Skaggs is another guy. Instead of going after an established
Rays pitcher, I wonder if somebody like Honeywell would be
possible.

With Bryant as an MVP and Hendricks with his season, those two
will really push the arb-escalation after next season.
Pretty awesome season.
Given the playoff "crapshoot" concept, lucky to have won one of
those in their second shot at it. If it's 1-random-shot-in-10,
having hit on our second try is pretty fortunate. And using the
premise that it's really just random once in the playoffs, we'll
get more random shots. Likely to remain among the
top-10/top-3rd teams in baseball for a number of the upcoming
seasons.
Still, if we hypothesize that it isn't totally random, then this
year past and the year upcoming may well be the best chances to
have the best teams. Which may strengthen the chances of both
getting in and getting through the playoffs.
*Once Bryant and Hendricks and the others start getting paid,
the salary-advantage window we enjoy now should tighten very
quickly.
*Lester and Arrieta, their windows of presence and excellence
may tighten quickly.
*Our minor league inventory of trade-ieces has already tightened
very quickly. (A year ago Gleyber, Contreras, Almora, McKinney,
Eloy, Edwards, Underwood, Candelario, Happ, and Vogelbach seemed
a very deep and varied pool of guys to involve in the right
trades, and Soler and Baez were both variably considered to be
high-leverage trade candidates. The inventory and reputation at
the minor league level now seems much reduced; plus Baez is no
longer a trade candidate, and Soler's trade value has lessened.)
Cubs may really want to strike again while their window is still
the most wide open.
(Heh heh, which might be a reason to Nowacrat want to prioritize
a good closer.)

I believe that winning it all once you're in the postseason is
"non random" but nonetheless greatly influenced by luck. I
don't think it's wise to make any nowacrat moves that greatly
hamper our ability to be very strong down the road, particularly
now that we have a WS under our belts. I'll leave it to Theo
and Jed to determine whether spending a bundle on a prime closer
falls into that category.

One factor that doesn't get talked about very much in postseason
baseball is advance scouting. You can't rely entirely on all
the stats available today. Having your best scouts eyeballing
future opponents can't be undervalued. It may have been a while
since you saw the teams you will face in the division and league
championship series and for sure a thorough and detailed report
is needed for the World Series.

It seems really unlikely that the A's will go through with a
trade when his value is so low. He was awful and hurt a lot
this year, so they're probably much better off just holding him
until the deadline. And if the A's are willing to sell low,
then I think that has to be interpreted as a red flag that the
A's think his arm is shot.
On another subject, here's MLBTradeRumors on the Rays:

Interesting that Smyly and Archer are listed, but not Odorizzi.
Smyly is kind of in the same boat as Gray--his value is way down
after a bad season. And I don't know if there are any teams
really have both a strong enough need for a starter and the
prospects Tampa will want to actually get Archer. I would've
expected Odorizzi to be the most likely trade candidate--as a
steady mid-rotation starter in the current market, it's hard to
imagine his value ever being higher.
Colome would be interesting for the Cubs. I wonder what the
Rays want for him.
