Thanks. Will be interesting to track what they say in future
interviews, and of course ultimately as the winter plays out.
You mention the two other priorities, but I don't think those
are relevant or impactful to the closer decision.
*1. I'm not sure a share-time LH CFer is going to be a very
big-ticket pickup.
*2. $$$ and free-agency is not a method for acquiring
controlled SP. You don't buy those in FA.
*3. The controlled SP you get in trade don't come with big
contracts. Especially not the types that are available in
exchange for Happ or Szczur or Candelario type prospects.
So, I'm not sure either the share-time CF or the controlled SP
will really compete much for the dollars a closer would cost.
Over the last year, their collection of controlled SP was
acquiring Montgomery and Warren, and resigning Cahill and
Richard. Those types of expenses don't really move the dial
much on whether or not you can afford Chapman or Melancon.

IMHO, if we lose in the postseason in '17 it's likely to be
because of the bullpen, so I'd like to see that be the area of
greatest effort this winter. And I'd rather not have to give up
a potential star like Torres on a rental again (and I'd argue
Jimenez is the only one we have left anyway, apart from possibly
Cease). Obviously you'd do the Chapman deal again 100 times out
of a hundred knowing how it turned out, but it still hurts.

We talked other day about maybe Soler to Seattle, but then
Seattle traded for Danny Valencia.
Mariners GM Jerry DiPoto then said plan is to platoon Valencia
at 1B with Vogelbach...and that Valencia only to play "some" RF.
So, now doesn't seem like that trade would have much if any
impact on our conjectural Soler-to-Seattle hypotheticals.

Unless the Cubs sign a free agent or two this winter, or make an
unexpected trade, Montgomery is almost certain to begin the year
as a starter.
I don't think the Cubs are going to go after a top of the
rotation starter this winter in the free agent market, nor make
a trade for one that does not include giving up one of their
current starters in exchange. This year showed that the team as
currently constituted is very likely to make the playoffs even
without a strong 5th starter (yes, I know that anything can
happen) and that a 5th starter isn't of much value in the
playoffs. If they bring anyone in through free agency or trade,
I would expect him/them to be about equivalent in talent and
cost to Montgomery.
