No on Cashner. Let him interest someone else.

pursue a top dollar closer via FA. Not sure what to make of
that, yet. Would love to reload for 2017 with Jansen or Chapman,
but the flip side is that relievers *are* so enigmatic, that I
understand the reluctance to fork over near 9 figures on a
closer, no matter how good. If we aren't signing a top flight
FA, really hoping to see some serious dough spent signing our
core to extensions.

1. Hard for me to imagine any of our core wanting to sign
extensions. Other than Arrieta. And Arrieta's a Boras boy, so
doubt he's too interested in doing anything home-town-discount.
Maybe Strop or Rondon; but not sure you're thinking of them as
"core", and with Rondon's arm and bad finish, not sure this is
the time for either side to do extension.
2. You mention "apparent unwillingness to pursue a top dollar
closer". Interesting, I haven't heard/read that or gotten that
indication. There have been so many articles and interviews,
I'm sure I've missed lots. Which of the guys expressed apparent
unwillingness to sign top closer, and how clearly/strongly?
I'd thought a Hoyer response last week was pretty clear that
they WOULD talk about Chapman; that they like Chapman a lot; and
that they certainly WOULD NOT just go with Rondon/Edwards/Strop
for closing.
3. Not arguing, but it's kind of funny that you're interested
in signing Hill rather than closer because relievers are so
enigmatic; when Hill enigmaticed his way through the minors for
14 years before finally getting called up for good late in his
age-35 season. When a guy didn't really find himself till age
35, I wonder how long it's safe that he'll stay found? It's a
great story.

Just for Curt: who do you dislike more? Samardz or Cashner?

This is going to be a tough off-season for us fans, I think.
Last year we knew they had some money to burn, and were going to
make some moves for pitching. We ended up with five big moves
that actually happened, (four big FA's plus Castro trade), plus
endless discussion about the Soler(Baez)-for-pitching trade
ideas that never happened.
Hoyer might not be nearly as active this winter, and
Candelario-for-Pitcher discussions won't be nearly as
interesting as last year.

Yeah, all those parades to attend. That whole month of October
that actually wasn't off-season for us like it usually is.
Figuring out how to improve a 103-win baseball club. Figuring
out how to create playing time for all of these excellent young
players. Talk about First World Problems. . . (but I know what
you meant, Craig).

I don't expect the Cubs to seriously pursue Chapman, Jansen, or
Melancon.

Hoyer will be plenty active. Theo is still going to need
coffee.

I was around Andrew Cashner a lot back in the day and he was a
real good dude.
A country boy like Lackey and Lester.
He drove a jacked up truck and listened to country music.
