I don't see why Strop and Rondon can't come back very strong
next season. It's not something you want to bank on, but also
not at all unlikely. Perhaps they would be willing to go into
the season with what they have in terms of late inning
relievers, potentially dealing for a closer mid season if
necessary.

Theo says Cubs more likely to "acquire" a CFer to complement
Almora in CF than having him as everyday guy there. Curious that
doesn't mention Heyward in CF.

I still think it's a mistake if they let Fowler walk. He's been
so important to this team over the last two years, and they have
plenty of payroll flexibility to bring him back. Unless his
market goes past 4 years, the Cubs should try to make it work.

Assuming, for sake of discussion, that Fowler departs, who leads
off in 2017?
Could put Zobrist there but really like Zobrist batting #5, as
in the Schwarber DH WS games.
Can Russell up his OBP from .321 to around .350 and move into
leadoff? That might be best option.
Out of the box? Contreras, who was .353 OBP in 2016 and could
probably lead-off just fine, when he's in lineup.
Not Almora but maybe the unknown guy that Theo talked about
acquiring?

Indeed curious Thoyer are making no mention of Heyward in CF.
With Schwarber back, if you add up the numbers that's one too
many everyday players.

Just out of curiosity...what kind of SP numbers would you think
Cahill would put up given 32 starts? Could he be at least as
good as Hammel?

Comment on Arrieta was interesting as well.
Talking points: Jake Arrieta is one of four Cubs players who are
arbitration-eligible, joining relievers Pedro Strop, Hector
Rondon and Justin Grimm. Epstein said he has not talked to
Arrieta's agent, Scott Boras, about a possible long-term
contract.
"The rotation was a big strength of ours in '16, and we plan on
competing for a World Championship in '17, and he's a part of
it," Epstein said.
Was the exclusive focus on 2017 for Arrieta meaningful?

I am guessing not. I like Cahill as an emergency starter, long
relief but thats about it. I think he is done as starter. I
suspect he looks for a starters job with another organization
this offseason. He will probably find a team willing to do it
though. ANA??

Jeff and deeg idea, LH partner for Almora. Makes sense, if you
can one at a good price. Hopefully Hoyer will find somebody
better than the Damon Buford/Tom Goodwin types Hendry used to
get to complement Corey Patterson.

Agree with Theo. Still, may be hard to hit 30 HR if he's behind
Heyward in right (with Heyward playing everyday in right not
center, no matter how well or badly he hits....) and behind
Schwarber and Zobrist in left.
