Nothing un-surprising there. Still, I'm always reaching to try
       to read things in....
       1. Doesn't rule out resigning Dexter, and says they'll keep in
touch with agent. But says they have internal options, good
       ones.
       2. Wants to find "controllable" pitching, both rotation and
relief. But mentions that will be the same answer over the next
       18-24 months. So, that's a rather long-term objective.
       3. Later talks about acquiring "option-able" pitching that can
start in the minor leagues, as well as guys that can help right
away. I found that interesting, maybe the most interesting
       comment.
Perhaps that's just standard scouring, and doesn't mean anything
more than standard signing of waiver guys and veteran
non-rosters like Patton, Acevedo, Fife, Gomes, Machi, Rucinski
last winter. 2015 mid-season Cahill and Richard pickups both
       paid off.
But I wonder if they'll be looking for more. I'm think Soler,
Candelario, Happ, Zagunis, maybe La Stella, shop those guys
around and see what the best minor-league pitching prospects you
can get in return? I'd love to transact Happ or Candelario into
some guy who was a top-20 AA pitcher. Not likely to get quality
long-term Lackey (and perhaps Arrieta?) replacements with waiver
       pickups.
       4.  On Chapman, positive about the guy, he was "wonderful" etc.;
no hints of clubhouse concerns. Will discuss it; but didn't
       give a decisive "yeah, we'll try our best to resign him";
somewhat guarded. With Fowler said they had good internal
options, but if they don't resign Chapman, he said without
hesitation that "Yeah, we'll look around".
       5. When discussing Rondon and Strop, he talked as if they just
didn't have enough innings to get back into groove. How
confident they are that rondon will be fine physically I think
impacts how active they'll need to be relief-wise.
I still believe that *IF* Rondon could come back sound and
healthy, and approach the "good" Rondon of the last couple of
years pre-DL, a pen with Chapman, Rondon, Strop, and Edwards
could be really, really, really good. (Heh heh, in my
simplistic world, I almost think it might be better if those
good RH relievers just pitched full-innings, rather than going
       all-Loogy.)

I certainly wouldn't have been confident leaning on even
pre-injury Rondon the way we leaned on Chapman in the
postseason. Not the same kind of pitcher.

Pre-injury Rondon could be a terrific 8th inning guy, though.

Yes. An 8th inning guy. That implies you have a closer who's
better. I suspect 2017 Derek Holland (or Carl Edwards) isn't
       gonna be that guy.

       Yup.
       9th: Chapman
       8th: Good Rondon
       7th: Strop:
       6th: Edwards
That could be a really good pen.

I think counting on Rondon as an 8th inning guy would be a
mistake. There are too many arm problems in his pre-Cubs
history to just assume he'll be fine again with rest and Spring
Training. I think it would be best to build the pen assuming
he's not going to be an 8th (or even 7th) inning guy, and then
end up pleasantly surprised if he ends up healthy.

Assuming a closer is brought in, the Cubs would have Rondon,
Strop, Edwards for possible 8th inning guys. Montgomery, if he
isn't in the rotation, would be another option. Grimm could be
       as well.

How many of Rondon's issues last year were brought on by rust?
The first half of the season, the Cubs played screw the closer.
Late in the season, I think it was injury, but he was healthy at
the time we got Chapman. He actually might be an interesting
trade piece if we do sign or resign a closer.
