If we don't re-sign Fowler, how about Alejandro De Aza as Almora
insurance?

I think Heyward is Almora insurance.

Is De Aza really better than Sczuzr?

Not appreciably. Veteran. Left handed hitter.
Just trying to drum up some discussion.

Sounds more and more like Theo is going to avoid expensive FA
relievers. Obviously the guy has earned a ton of trust, but
trying to do the bullpen on the cheap cost us Torres and almost
the World Series. Hope he doesn't regret it.

Yeah, Almora/Szczur both RH. Having a LH complement would have
some logic.

Unmentioned is Chris Coghlan, he's a FA and presumably choosing
his own somewhere-else team, right? He's not great defensively,
but Maddon has been fine with him in either RF or LF. Not sure
he's interested in coming back as a depth guy, but I think the
Cubs would be well served to bring him back, if he's interested.
My Logic:
1. In his 3 seasons with the Cubs, he's been a .779, .784, and
.804-OPS guy: a very functional offensive guy for the Cubs, and
a good OBP guy. Cheap guys with good OBP and good OPS, it's
nice to have a stock of those.
2. He won't be expensive.
3. I consider Schwarber, Heyward, and Zobrist the primary
starting OF.
With Coghlan, and assuming Soler is not traded: would an
overall bench with Montero, LaStella, Coghlan, Almora, and Soler
(3 lefties, 2 rights) be too LHed? I don't think so, really....
**Against LH pitchers, could be going Soler-Almora-Zobrist in OF
(so no shortage of RH bats).
**Against righties, Schwarber-Heyward-Zobrist, but with Coghlan
playing semi-regularly.
**If Coghlan was hitting, he could get OF starts when Schwarber
played catcher to rest Contreras; or when Zobrist played 2B to
rest either Baez or Russell. So, Coghlan could end up starting
a decent number of games, if he was hitting well.
4. If Soler was to be traded: that might make having a
good-offense bench outfielder like Coghlan more important.
Then could have Montero, LaStella, Coghlan, Almora, and Szczur
**Vs. LHP either Szczur or one of Schwarber/Heyward would need
to start against LHP. But, that's fine, they certainly are
hoping that Schwarber or Heyward or both will be guys they want
playing a lot even against LH starters.
Again, not sure Coghlan will want to come back. But if he did,
I think the Cubs might end up glad if they keep him.
