One approach to the rotation situation is to trade for prospect
pitcher, stash in minors, with options. Vogelbach for
Montgomery, prospect for youngish guy. Soler isn't going to get
a proven #2-#3 guy. But perhaps Soler/Happ might get you a
pretty promising A/AA pitcher, who's got 2-3 years of options
left. Maybe the guy becomes nice rotation depth. Maybe he
develops well, and pick up Lackey's spot.
But I think I might rather go after some good-arm-good-stuff
Daytona-level guy rather than pursuing guys in the
       Warren/Cahill/Richard/Wood type landscape.
Part of my thinking, I guess, is that it's maybe good to hold
onto potential stud prospects. And I perceive Eloy that way.
If management goes into the winter thinking that Eloy and Cease
are off bounds, for example, do they have enough other resources
to be using trade to get significant pieces? Or are we
basically going into the winter where Eloy is exactly the
capital they figure to spend, and they'll simply shop him to see
what's the best thing they can get in return, but we should
assume he'll be gone before March?
And if not trade, then their is FA. Again, hard for me to guess
what the Cubs feel like they've got available for spending
there; or how they project their future spending constraints.

Of course I know we'll be able to get a lefty, or two. I'm just
kind of thinking that this maybe leverages a guy like Wood to
get more $$$ from the Cubs than I wish we had to spend.

I'd be surprised if Rob Z isn't given a good opportunity.

One option if we're really playing for October is to go with a
six-man rotation basically all season. That absolves the need
to "stash" the 6th starter. If one of those guys goes down you
can go to 5, or skip the 6th starter if there's a stretch with a
       lot of off days.

Any interest in Hellickson if he turns down the Q.O.?

With Hammel, I can see the "start or release, but don't trade
the option" handshake. I still thought that for $10, he might
be getter member of 6-man rotation than we'll be able to acquire
       otherwise.
But may be that after spending-ahead on Heyward, that they just
feel strongly-pressed budget-wise. May just feel they need that
$10 in order to be able afford Chapman and any other bullpen
expenses. Basically replace Fowler and Hammel with Almora and
Montgomery, use the savings for Chapman/pen, and keep the
       payroll from going crazy.

I'd like to avoid losing any picks in the draft unless it is
Jansen. 2 years without a big IFA or first round pick is going
       to hurt the farm.
FA starting pitchers aren't going to be an upgrade over
Montgomery, it is either a trade or he is the 5th starter.
One thing on Hammel, $10 million won't get you a great starter,
but it will be more than enough for a nice bullpen arm.

Interesting the Cubs aren't listed as one of the teams attending
the Holland showcase today - you'd think they'd be interested.

Rich Hill would be an upgrade.

Pretty sure that means nothing. Unless we read that Cubs have no
interest (possible), anything you're reading about the workout
is not an all-inclusive listing of clubs attending.

Yeah, re-signing Chapman would go a long way toward addressing
       off-season needs. Let's do that.
With Montgomery likely in rotation, good chance that Zastryzny
takes over a lefty bullpen role. Think that will happen. As to
       T. Wood, would like to see an upgrade to free agent Brett Cecil
in that spot. Cecil over Wood.
Would be fine about bringing back Cahill but have to believe
he'll be moving on. Why not Joe Smith? He looked good after his
DL return and doubt there will be bunch of other suitors for
him. Smith night be good value.
Aside from closer, think the major move will be a rotation
guy---probably not an "established" quality guy but a guy the
brass likes and see as a projectable value. Don't see any
problem in stashing a guy like that. Can always bullpen this
guy, bullpen Montgomery, whatever. Is rest of rotation going to
be almost-entirely healthy AGAIN in 2017? Not a problem.
Finally, would be fine with keeping Soler if a pitcher deal can
be done without him. Just depends on kind of offers for him.
Obviously, Soler still has decent chance to be really, really
good. But, even without Fowler, Soler figures to be 5th OFer
(Schwarber, Zobrist, Heyward, Almora), with Baez clearly the 2B
       regular going forward.
Don't see bringing in another catcher. If Fowler departs and
Soler traded, could see bringing in an OFer better than Szczur
       for final bench spot.
Think you can get a projectable starting pitcher with a package
of Soler, Candelario, + another prospect, or some variation.
That's an attractive package. Not going to get an established
quality guy for that but trust Theo and the brain trust to
identify a guy with a future.
