I agree. Unless they had a previous agreement with him to do
so, it doesn't make much sense.
It does open a hole in the rotation. I wouldn't be surprised if
they sign a free agent to compete against Montgomery and to add
       depth.

I'd go after a #2/3 type starter. Don't know who.
       [/quote]
       Easier said than done.
Who's left to give up for a controllable 2/3 starter? The
minors is not where it was a couple of years ago - the Chapman
trade (which has been wholly justified) took a lot out of it.
Jimenez is really the only true elite prospect in the minors
right now, IMHO. Cease has elite talent, but the risk is huge
       with him.
Maybe Soler/Happ could get you a #3 type? Possibly, but
probably only one who's a FA at the end of 2017.

Fowler will get the Q.O. (no surprise there) but will decline it
       (even less surprise there).

Wow, shocked with the Hammel thing. Very much too bad for Cubs.
I appreciate if there was a respectful "agreement". They'll be
paying a chunk of millions to both Hammel and Fowler this year,
even if they have neither of them.

Archer impressed me during his time on the tube during the
post-season. For the most part, he came across as a very
       thoughtful, intelligent guy.

Guessing that Theo is thinking October/November baseball for his
2017 Cubs. So, with Hammel, he has a guy who for SEVEN straight
seasons either stinks in second half or is hurt. So, why pay a
       guy $12 if he's likely a non-factor after the all-star break?
Guessing that is the Cubs thinking. And, apparentky had a
gentleman's agreement not to sign-and-trade. Doing Hammel a
favor. Why not? He was a good trouper here.
Also guessing Cubs will be looking to trade for an upside
potential SP who maybe has been up-and-down in performance but
       maybe has chance to blossom.
Could be wrong, of course. Maybe will put a deal together for
Verlander---but how about Trevor Bauer? Obviously, a
command-issue guy. Still like his upside and might be expendable
in Cleveland with Carrasco and Salazar back and Tomlin emerging.
Like Foltynewich with Braves but doubt he'll be available.

Verlander is Hammel's age and has nearly $90 left for three
years. Might as well sign Arrieta who's three years younger.

And I'd do that anyway. Tear up Arrieta's deal and give him six
years, essentially a 5-year extension. You never know how many
of the position players the Cubs will be able to keep down the
line so they need to take advantage of the next 5-6 years.
Having Arrieta, Lester, and Hendricks there for that period
       would go a long way.

Don't see it quite your way, reb.
       1. Don't know that we've got tons of resources with which to
acquire really promising rotation guys. I don't think they want
to trade Baez or Schwarber. So basically our ammo is down to
Jiminez (who I'd hate to trade), Soler (whose value must be very
reduced), and marginal guys like Happ.
       2. As you well know, rotation-injuries are a thing, and having
rotation depth is essential. Last winter between Warren,
Cahill, Wood, and Richard, it was obvious they were concerned
about rotation depth. (Even if that crowd ended up producing
very little rotation-wise.) With Hammel back, Montgomery would
have been very nice 6th-starter insurance, as he was during
2nd-half this season. Now, if you're promoting him to the
rotation, you're left with Zastryzny as your only rotation
depth. This puts them very urgently on the "need-depth"
       landscape.
       3. The problem with rotation depth is where do you stash it?
The two places are in the bullpen, and at Iowa. But, anybody
who can be stashed at Iowa either needs to have options, i.e. is
"just" a prospect, or else needs to have very fringy value.
(How many good major-league rotation pitchers are looking to
sign minor-league contracts to pitch for Iowa?) So, that means
the pen will need to be housing guys who need to be rotation
options. Maybe that's good, and a good pitcher ought to be able
to get guys out in either role. But, it may crowd the pen, and
make it harder to have the volume of pure-relievers that are
best used as Maddon may want them to be used?
       4. If Montgomery is the guy promoted to rotation, that will
weaken the bullpen, and create holes there. The pen has had
Richard (gone), Wood (FA), Montgomery, and Zastryzny as
pre-closer lefties. If Z is working at Iowa and being ready in
case of rotation emergency, and Montgomery is pitching rotation,
that leaves the bullpen devoid of present lefties. Keeping
Hammel might have avoided creating an unnecessary urgency to
       pay-whatever-price for lefty relief.

Of course I know we'll be able to get a lefty, or two. I'm just
kind of thinking that this maybe leverages a guy like Wood to
get more $$$ from the Cubs than I wish we had to spend.
