Sherrod sounds like somebody Tice could have a good effect on.

Some people have said that Sherrod is basically Chris Williams
with slightly longer arms and a better health record...
I've got to think though that even the 5th rated OT in the draft
(Sherrod) could come in from Day One and do better at LT than
anyone we've tried there the last 3 years.
We would still then need to address the interior of the OL as
well, whether with our 3rd round pick or FA. Wiesniewski
falling to the bottom of the 3rd would be perfect but he won't
last that long.
Drafting Sherrod would also likely send either Omiyale or
Williams packing as Sherrod doesn't project inside and Webb will
be a 2011 starter, whether he retains his RT spot or gets moved
to the left side.

Heard on the Score today that Martz and Tice are saying they are
looking for big players capable of playing either OG or OT. I
guess he means interchangeable.

I know he is 27, but I am like the idea of Danny Watkins if some
of the other players we are talking about aren't there. I
wonder if he would be available in a trade down? Yes he is 27,
but if he is drafted and gives us 8 solid years, I won't
complain. That's like signing a FA starting out there 2nd
contract.

If Watkins can come in right off the bat and start for 5 years
at a high level I wouldn't be disappointed.
If he comes in and takes 2 years to get up to speed then can
start for 4 years I would be disappointed.

I would definitely have mixed feelings about taking Watkins with
our 1st rounder. Even assuming he could start from Day One, he
will turn 27 during the season which makes his realistic NFL
shelf life about 5 years. There are occasionally interior OL
who play at a high level into their mid-30s but they are few and
far between. One only has to look at current Bears like Kreutz
(33) and Garza (32) and former guys like Ruben Brown to see how
things can start to tail off in a hurry on the back side of 30.
Also, one article I read raised a very good point that the
difference in physical development between a 25-year old man and
a 19 or 20 year old is significant... i.e., while Watkins was
literally a "man among boys" in college, the physical dominance
he showed at Baylor may not translate over to the NFL where he's
facing guys his own age.
Now OTOH, Watkins' intangibles are unquestionable and he would
certainly inject some "blue collar" character and toughness into
an OL that badly needs it. There is also the fact that he played
OT in college and realistically could plug in from Day One at
either OG or even RT. In that event though our coaches would
have to be 100% confident either that Omiyale can continue to
improve at LT or that Webb can get it done on the blindside
because Watkins is most definitely not an LT prospect whereas a
guy like Sherrod would have a legitimate chance to upgrade us
there.
To me, Watkins, Sherrod and Marcus Cannon are all about
half-a-round reaches for us at 29, but guys I'd be OK with
taking if the top OL and DT talent is all gone. All three of
those guys have different reasons for not being ranked in the
top tier but with the caliber of talent on our current OL, even
guys who aren't future All-Pros will still be an upgrade. We may
also have to accept the reality that we're not going to find an
upgrade for LT in the draft and that we will have to hope for
the best at that position in 2011 and hope that by upgrading
some of the other positions on the OL we can make it work.

If Watkins is still there at 29 and we trade down to the 2nd, we
will lose out on him because the Steelers will take him at 31.
And if they don't, the Patriots will take him with the 1st pick
of the 2nd round as they have to potentially replace both of
their starting OGs this offseason.
The Steelers and Patriots are two teams that always understand
the importance of good OLs and we really don't want to putting
ourselves at their mercy... even if getting a starter for our
OL means we stay at 29 and reach by a few spots.

This is a good strategy, #1 because it expands your field of
prospects and #2 because it puts everyone on the OL on notice
that they are subject to upgrading. Seriously, I think the only
two OL currently on the Bears roster who should feel reasonably
secure about their status are Kreutz (who will start at C if he
is re-signed), and Webb (who will start somewhere on the OL
whether that be at RT or LT). The other OT position and both G
spots, in my mind at least, are wide open.
The coaches' comment also makes me think they may have Marcus
Cannon on their radar, a 6'6 360-lb brick house of a man who
played OT at TCU but may project to OG at the next level. With
him at RT and Herman Johnson at RG we could run to the right all
day long.
Scouting Report
A massive, thickly built offensive lineman who fills out his
frame really well and doesn't look to have much soft flesh
through his mid-section despite his weight. Has experience at
both right and left tackle and has been one of the most dominant
linemen in the MWC over the past three years. Showcases solid
flexibility in his lower half and has the ability to sit into
his stance, fire off the football without much wasted motion and
create a real jolt on contact in the run game. Blocks with
leverage despite his size initially off the football, can get
under defenders and is really heavy handed through contact.
Exhibits a good, balanced punch off the ball, extends his long
arms well into contact and can create a jolt at the point. But,
he doesn't play with a consistent mean streak and at times will
get a bit upright through contact and be content to just seal.
But when TCU needs a yard he definitely has the ability to
routinely drive defenders off the football and finish. However,
needs to do a better job getting off the snap count on time. Too
often is the last lineman moving off the snap and will initially
allow opposing defenders to get under and into his frame,
forcing him to play from behind instead of consistently being
the aggressor.
Showcases good range off the edge in the pass game for his size,
but isn't real coordinated on his kick-slide. Has a tendency to
lose balance easily in his footwork, gets overextended easily
and is forced to open up his hips in order to reach defenders
flattening out around the corner. Now, he does have the length,
power and coordination to unleash a nasty punch on contact and
is a Velcro guy who is at his best when asked to anchor and move
his feet through contact, but will struggle with athleticism and
burst off the edge.
Impression: A massive, strong body with some bend and natural
athleticism for his size. Lacks the range to play left tackle in
the NFL, but I could see him starting at either a right tackle
or guard and becoming a solid starter at either spot.
