Angelo may trade up a few spots if he can grab an O-lineman who
grades out (doubtful), but is much more likely to draft a DT.
I'd be OK with that. If you would have dropped 1st year Tommie
Harris into last years defense, those guys would have been
unstoppable, Peppers would have had 15 sacks and Izzy 10 or
more. Angelo and Lovie "win" with defense.
Just pick the right guy, *******!

Or, one hell of a big safety, with 4.4 speed and a 38-inch
vertical. But I'd have to really be confident in his ability to
cover at the NFL level before I took that flyer.
Kinda reminds me of that Quentin Scott guy we brought into camp
out of Northern Iowa last year.

I'm not sure a stud 3-Technique makes our D quite that good.
You still have to cover people and get off the field on 3rd
down.
It would certainly help though, and is definitely Need 1a
relative to our OL and could very easily be the position where
best value is available at the bottom of the 1st and especially
if the much predicted run on OL ahead of us materializes.

Why do I have this nagging feeling that all of the blue chip
prospects at positions of need are going to be gone when we
pick. Then we will have to take a flyer on someone and hope
they are not a bust. I think we are cursed.

APAs Auburn quarterback Cam Newton continues to face more
scrutiny than any other player in this years draft, some
observers including Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon
have said they see racial bias in the way Newton is being
scrutinized.
But another Hall of Famer, Jerry Rice, sees things differently.
Rice said this morning on ESPN Radio that he believes
African-American quarterbacks were discriminated against in the
past, but that the league has advanced beyond those days.
I think the NFL is so much further now, Rice said. I dont
think race is a factor.
Rice said he has met Newton and came away impressed, both with
Newtons attitude and with what an imposing physical specimen
Newton is. But Rice said that there are legitimate questions
about whether Newton has the tools to be a pro-style passer.
Its going to boil down to accuracy, Rice said. Hes going to
have to be able to drop back, plant himself and deliver that
football. During his workouts the ball was a little high, all
over the place.
Ultimately, thats the only question that matters about Newton:
Whether he can transition from a great spread-offense
quarterback in college to a great pro-style quarterback in the
NFL.

It sure is looking that way at least on the OL where a couple
months ago it looked like we might have our pick and now all the
good ones might be gone by 29.
It may honestly come down to one of three scenarios, none of
which is ideal: 1) g-amble on a guy (probably defensive) with
Top 20 talent who has fallen due to character concerns (Marvin
Austin, or possibly Jimmy Smith); 2) stick to needs and reach by
half a round or so on a 2nd-tier player; or, 3) go strictly on
value and take the best player available (which may not align
with our positional needs and would almost certainly bring howls
of protest from the Bear faithful who have watched us muck along
with subpar talent on both lines for several years now).

hopefully Angelo goes for BPA at DL or OL.
I mean if there is great value at DL, we can likely buy an
upgrade on the OL through FA. Since the draft is first this year
then you'll know in FA exactly what you have (drafted anyway).

Derek Sherrod has been popping up as our 1st rounder in mock
drafts a lot. He seems like a solid player and some have called
him the most polished OT in this class, but for whatever reason
is considered more like the best of the 2nd tier rather than a
top tier guy. Possibly his smallish size (6'5 305)... possible
the scouts don't see as much upside in him as some of the
others... I dunno. In any event I think we could definitely do
worse if he was still there.
A tall, long-armed athlete who possesses good overall size and
length for the position. Exhibits above-average balance, range
and body control on his kick-slide from a two-point stance. Does
a nice job reaching the corner, staying somewhat compact with
his footwork and is fluid changing directions in space.
Possesses good natural flexibility, but struggles to
consistently keep his pad level down through the play, has a
tendency to get upright at times Has improved his patience and
hand placement as a puncher this season, quickly getting in and
under opposing defenders and doing a better job sticking though
contact. Does a nice job working to stay engaged, is playing
with better leverage this season and can get under defenders
while keeping his frame clean through pass pro. But, can still
be bullied into the backfield at times, gets himself into
trouble against physical rushers because of his higher pad level
and isn't the most compact of punchers.
Exhibits a good initial burst out of his stance in the run game,
understands angles and has the ability to quickly zone step and
seal defenders away from the play. Looks natural on the move, is
quickly able to get out of the second level, drop his pad level
and hit a moving target. But isn't overly dominant on contact.
Allows defenders to work their way off his blocks and doesn't
have the type of power or mental makeup to simply lock out and
drive opposing linebackers into the dirt. Needs to do a better
job with his hand placement on contact in the run game as well.
Too often keeps his hands too low when asked to engage and can
be easily swatted on at the point. However, does exhibit good
body control and footwork on the move when trying to mirror on
slide-down blocks or get around and reach.
Impression: A smooth, graceful blocker with good range, change
of direction skills and quickness in both the run and pass game.
Needs to learn to play a little lower, but has the ability to
mirror in space and possesses the makeup of a starting left
tackle in the NFL.

From another scouting report on Sherrod... this one lists him
at 320 vs. 305.
Strengths:
Ideal height and good bulk with large hands
Quick and agile with above average athleticism
Light on feet. Able to slide and mirror laterally
Good footwork, balance and body control
Technically sound and uses his hands well
Understands positioning and angles
Great pass blocker and can protect the edge
Does a solid job in the run game as a drive blocker
Effective in space and can get to the second level
Smart with excellent instincts and awareness
Mature, hard working and a leader
Is tough and has proven to be durable
Tons of experience versus top competition
Weaknesses:
Just average strength and overall power
Doesn't have real long arms but adequate
Will get tall and lose leverage at times
Not overly stout at the point of attack
Has some trouble anchoring and sustaining
Isn't a dominant road grading run blocker
Not overly aggressive and may lack a killer instinct
