I don't know if I do... but apparently Angelo and the coaches
do since they spent one of our draft picks on him a year in
advance.
What I personally suspect will happen at RB this year is that
Taylor will be retained and also that Martz' interests will
trump Toub's... meaning that Garrett Wolfe gets the pink slip
and Unga and Kahlil Bell fight it out for the 3rd RB spot that
Wolfe has been occupying essentially as a 100% special-teamer.
In that fight I believe Unga has the advantage because he is a
true power back whereas Bell is pretty much the same type of
weapon as the 2 guys ahead of him.

Unga probably would have been a FA had the Bears not spent the
pick. They must have seen something that moved them to spend the
pick. And besides there are RBs that are FAs that can still
play. I thinki its too early to judge what Unga has or doesnt
have. I'll wait till training camp to see what hes got if we
even have a training camp this year.

I didn't know it but he's BYU's all-time leading rusher and
accomplished that in just 3 seasons. Even in the
defense-challenged conference BYU plays in, that's pretty
impressive.

So why was he almost not drafted? Sounds like he's a project to
me.

I may have this wrong, but what I recall happening with Unga was
that he was planning to come back for his senior year at BYU,
then he got busted on the "Honor Code" violation and chose to
withdraw, however this was after the deadline for declaring for
the draft. So his only option was the supplemental draft and
that's where we got him for this year's 7th round pick... i.e.,
2 picks away from the last pick in the entire draft.
Scouting reports on Unga are hard to come by but it appears if
he had entered the regular draft he would probably have been a
6th round pick or maybe a 5th, not so much based on production
or character but based on the fact that he's a 6'0 240-lb guy
that's less than a franchise RB but more than just a blocking FB
so a lot of scouts had problems seeing how an NFL team would
find a way to use him. I think it's very likely he's not so much
a project as a "tweener" and/or specialty player and those kinds
of players tend to fall in the draft, sometimes severely.

Because he was in a suplemental draft, not the regular April
draft. Its why he lasted till the 7th round. Nobody wanted to
spend a 2011 draft pick on him

The way I see it, over the course of the season if Unga can get
us a couple short-yardage conversions a game, 5 or 6 goal-line
TDs and 400-600 combined rushing/receiving yards... for a 7th
round pick that's a steal.
He's got to be able go give us more than that worthless POS
Jason McKie did.

I seem to remember Unga having really good reviews for a guy his
size. And I would say bye bye to Kahlil Bell and keep Wolfe.
All of the Bell love is based on one single run he broke for
70-something yards. Other than that, he is VERY mediocre.
