Scouting Report
Paea has been a force on the defensive line for Oregon State the
past three seasons, but his recent display of strength may have
NFL teams drooling come draft day. Paea set the combine record
by bench pressing 225 pounds 49 times in just one minute. The
first-team All-American tackle showed why he won Pac-10
defensive player of the year his junior season before deciding
to leave a year early for the NFL. In addition, he set a school
record with nine career forced fumbles and won the Morris Trophy
in back-to-back seasons as the conference's top defensive
lineman. Paea had 45 tackles and a career-high six sacks in 2010
and expects to have his name called early in the April draft.
He's viewed as a versatile run stopper who can brush off double
teams and plug holes. Paea's exceptional strength and work ethic
have garnered him high praise from pro scouts looking to add an
immediate NFL contributor. The knock on Paea is his ability to
get to the quarterback, not having shown many moves which would
better his pass-rushing success. Still, Paea isn't expected to
last past the middle of the first round, with multiple teams
showing interest.

Bears trade up to pick Oregon State's Paea
By: Larry Mayer | Last Updated: 4/29/2011 7:10 PM
LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears traded up nine spots in the second
round of the draft to select Oregon State defensive tackle
Stephen Paea at No. 53. They made the move by dealing their
fourth-round pick (No. 127) to the Washington Redskins.
Bears director of player personnel Tim Ruskell said that Paea is
a versatile, strong and quick player who is capable of playing
both defensive tackle positions, the nose and three technique.
Ruskell went on to say that Paea is quick off the ball and
disruptive and possesses a passion for the game.
Paea told the Chicago media on a conference call that he feels
blessed to be selected by the Bears and is excited about playing
in a 4-3 defense that's similar to the one he excelled in at
Oregon State.

And he is a strong safety. The guy was a LBer that was asked to
drop weight and become a safety.
He is a good football player but looks to be the wrong type of
safety we need. We need a safety who can cover receivers.
