Bowers is supposed to be a stud, but does he play the 3
technique that makes Lovie's cover 2 go?

Nope he's a DE of which we have plenty already. Someone might
make the argument for Bowers in the bottom of the 2nd purely on
the basis of value... but to me with him being out of Clemson,
the potential permanent knee issue, the 2nd round pick etc., it
feels too much like Gaines Adams The Sequel to make me real
comfortable with that choice should it happen.

If we can't get Austin, I would take a flyer on Bowers. If his
knee is not 100% and he is only a situational pass rusher he
could provide value late in the 2nd. If he is healthy then he is
a steal.

If our medical and training staff was competent, I would agree.

Yeah, based on our track record with guys with medical
problems....please pass. Look what we did with Tommie Harris
after his injury.

Marc Colombo, Tommie Harris, Chris Williams, etc. etc.
The medical staff clears guys for us to draft that we should
never have taken, and then when they inevitably get hurt we
botch their diagnosis and recovery beyond repair. It all adds
up to bad return on investment and it seems like the higher the
draft pick the more we botch it.
Which is my only concern about Carimi. I love the guy and he
was a good value and should be a great fit... but he does have a
less than clean medical history specifically regarding a
shoulder and his right knee. I suspect that's why he nearly fell
out of the 1st round altogether.

The pictures I saw of Carimi he has huge braces on both knees.
Hopefully that is for support and protection, and we let him
keep wearing them...

I think you're thinking about Christian Ballard.
Two things about him. #1, he recently failed a drug test for
weed. #2, how good will he be without Adrian Clayborn next to
him? Those are the questions I'd have about him.
Scouting report is below but he appears to be a notch below
Marvin Austin (although bigger), and a guy who may take a season
or two before really making an impact.
6'4, 283, 4.80
Strengths:
• Ideal height and bulk with long arms and big hands
• Athletic with excellent speed, quickness and agility
• Explosive with a burst and able to close in a hurry
• Powerful bull rusher who can re-establish the line
• Naturally strong and is stout at the point of attack
• Active and aggressive with an above average motor
• A hard worker who is committed to improving his game
• Offers plenty of positional / schematic versatility
• Still developing and has not yet maxed out potential
• Durable with lots of experience versus top competition
Weaknesses:
• Overall instincts and awareness seem to be lacking
• Not a polished technician and doesn't use hands well
• Must develop additional pass rush moves and counters
• Will often struggle to shed and get off of blocks
• High pad level and must play with better leverage
• Isn't a reliable tackler and won't always wrap up
• Wasn't overly productive or much of a sack artist
Notes:
A three-year starter for the Hawkeyes --- Named Honorable
Mention All-Big Ten in 2009 and 2010 --- Saw extensive action as
both tackle and end during college career --- Overshadowed by
teammate Adrian Clayborn at Iowa but is a fine pro prospect in
his own right --- Could project to defensive tackle in a 4-3
scheme or the five-technique in a 3-4 front --- Far from a
finished product but is an extremely intriguing physical
specimen with all the physical tools and considerable upside.

Drake Nevis would be another possibility. The bottom of the 2nd
still feels like a bit of a reach for such an obvious spot
player, but he has produced against some of the best college OLs
in the country and the fact that there aren't a lot of teams in
the league anymore interested in a 6'1 285-lb DT could mean he's
there for us to at least consider.
There's also that smallish DT out of South Florida (McClain),
that Lovie and Marinelli have scouted extensively and seems to
be flying under a lot of peoples' radar.
Don't rule out a WR or CB either if there's value at one of
those positions that isn't there at DT.
