Because of the Bears mistake, Newsome told the league that the
Ravens deserved the fourth-round pick, a source said. But the
NFL denied the request...This is the second time in eight years
that the Ravens had trouble completing a trade in the first
round. In 2003, the Ravens wanted to move three spots up from
No. 10 to take quarterback Byron Leftwich. But Jacksonville,
which wanted Leftwich with the No. 8 pick, intentionally tied up
the phone lines to prevent the trade between the Ravens and
Minnesota. When the time ran out on the Vikings, the Jaguars
ran up to pick Leftwich. The Ravens eventually won out on the
deal because it wound up with Terrell Suggs with the 10th pick.
Suggs became a Pro Bowl pass rusher while Leftwich has a losing
record (24-25) as a starting quarterback.

Wow we dodged some bullets and came away with the best possible
scenario.
Both the Eagles and Seahawks passing on Carimi was huge. So was
KC taking Baldwin as they were pretty much the consensus
destination for Carimi in the mocks.
I was scared sh-itless we would take Bowers but smarter heads
prevailed. And the Ravens saved us from the risk of Jimmy Smith
even though we're now probably on their trading blacklist for
eternity.
Getting that impact DT now will be a challenge. It may cost our
2nd and 3rd to get up high enough in the 2nd to get Austin. But
like I said, this is a two player draft for us and if Austin is
still around as the Vikings pick approaches we had damn well
better trade up ahead of them to get him. The Vikings are fools
to have passed on Fairley but let's not give them a 2nd chance
with Austin.
And yes, even with Carimi we have big big problems ahead with
the Lions if our interior OL doesn't get a lot bigger and better
in a hurry.

lions have gotten young, fast, and angry. I should be pissed but
I can't get that way. That team has been beat up forever.
Coolest looking uni's in the league imo.

Kinda surprised nobody is on here wailing about spending our 1st
rounder on "only" a RT. Since that was so much a point of
contention the last time we took an OT in the 1st.
Irregardless, Carimi is clearly tailor made for the Bears and a
guy who WILL start on Day One even if we don't know where yet.
He is quite possibly already the best O-Lineman on our roster
and that's before Tice gets him coached-up. Here's a
cut-and-paste from one scouting report... the Weaknesses can't
be pooh-poohed but also keep in mind we got him 8-10 spots below
where most of the "experts" had him going and it seems like most
of the cons (other than durability) could be fixed with
coaching.
Strengths:
Prototypical size with long arms and large hands
Solid in pass pro with nimble feet to slide / mirror
Fairly stout at point and gets good push in run game
Decent strength and delivers a violent initial punch
Polished technician with great hand use and footwork
Intelligent with excellent instincts and awareness
Very tough and willingly plays through pain / injuries
Mature, hard working and is respected by teammates
A ton of experience against top-notch competition
Weaknesses:
Merely average athleticism, agility and balance
Issues with speed and struggles to protect edge
Not a knee bender, plays tall and leverage suffers
Will too often gets caught reaching and leaning
Falls off of blocks and does not sustain very well
Has some trouble in space and at the second level
Is not a finisher and may lack a killer instinct
A history of injuries and durability is a concern
Notes:
Last name is pronounced "kuh-REE-mee" --- A four-year starter
and team captain for the Badgers --- Named 1st Team All-Big Ten
in 2009 and 2010 --- 1st Team All-American in 2010 --- Won the
2010 Outland Trophy as the nation's top interior lineman --- The
Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2010 --- A civil and
environmental engineering major who was named Academic All-Big
Ten four straight years --- Very committed to Jewish faith and
fasts during Yom Kippur --- Missed three games with a right knee
injury in 2008 --- Missed half of fall camp in 2009 with a right
knee injury --- Suffered left shoulder (AC joint) injury in 2009
--- Actually replaced Joe Thomas, the #3 overall pick in the
2007 NFL Draft, at left tackle in Madison --- Overrated blocker
with all the tools to be a starter at the next level but is not
the elite blindside protector and early first rounder that
some have made him out to be.
