This guy can catch, run, return and even throw the ball.
I was fully expecting Cobb to be a first-round pick, so in my
opinion, the Packers got an absolute steal drafting him in the
second.
He's going to contribute instantly to the return game, and I
expect him to play a role in the offense right away.
Depending on how the Packers handle James Jones in free agency,
and how much they trust a guy like Brett Swain, I think Cobb
might get more playing time than what many people are expecting.
I expect at least two offensive touchdowns out of him and one in
the return game in 2011. Let's throw a touchdown pass in the mix
as well; I think the Packers have that little wrinkle in their
playbook!

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Browns continue to add players before
they begin training camp this Sunday.
Thursday night, the Browns agreed to a two year deal with
running back Brandon Jackson. The deal is worth 4.5 million
dollars according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Jackson made 13 starts for the Super Bowl champion Green Bay
Packers in 2010, rushing for 703 yards on 190 carries.
The 25-year old has the pass catching skills that new head coach
Pat Shurmur likes as part of the west coast offense. Jackson has
110 career catches in his four season in Green Bay.
The Browns can not officially announce the signing until Friday
evening.

Packers inform Chillar he has been released

The Green Bay Packers released linebacker Brandon Chillar Friday
morning, raising questions about whether the league is being
unfair to players who were injured while training during the
lockout.

Chillar, who severely pulled a hamstring during personal
workouts, was told that he had been let go. There was no way he
was going to pass his physical, but the Packers could have put
him on the physically unable to perform list if they thought he
could come back from the injury.

Given Chillar is coming off shoulder surgery, it's possible the
combination of injuries made it likely he wouldn't play this
year and the Packers decided to move forward without him. I'll
know more about the process in which this occurred later.

Chillar signed a four-year, $19 million contract that included
$7 million over the first year back in December of 2009. He was
due to make $2 milion in base salary, $300,000 in a roster bonus
and $300,000 in a workout bonus this year.

As a result of his release, the Packers will gain $1.8 million
in salary cap space. That's his $2.6 million earnings in 2011
minus $800,000 of pro-rated signing bonus money left in 2012 and
'13.

Through the release of linebacker Nick Barnett, end Justin
Harrell, linebacker Brady Poppinga and Chillar, general manager
Ted Thompson has sliced of $10.4 million off the Packers' salary
cap. He started out right at the $120 million limit.

I've been told the June 1 rules still apply under this
collective bargaining agreement, so that means all of the
pro-rated signing bonus money in future years gets pushed to
next year instead of this year. So, the Packers will gain all
$2.6 million of Chillar's earning this year and will take a
charge of $800,000 next year.

Through the release of linebacker Nick Barnett, end Justin
Harrell, linebacker Brady Poppinga and Chillar, general manager
Ted Thompson has sliced off $12.7 million of the Packers' salary
cap. Those same cuts will cost him $2.48 million next year
because of the pro-rated shares left over in each player's
contract.

The Packers were right at the $120 million salary cap mark at
the start of free agency.

Kicker Mason Crosby's deal will account for more cap money spent
and so will each of the draft choices the Packers sign.

The headliner from Friday is second-round pick Randall Cobb.
Still left for the Packers to hammer out before Saturday's first
practice is first-round pick Derek Sherrod and third-round pick
Alex Green.
Eight down, two to go with the clock ticking until the first
practice of training camp starts at 7 p.m. Saturday.
The Green Bay Packers announced the signing of seven draft picks
on Friday evening, headlined by second-round pick Randall Cobb.
Four of the signings were reported by Packer Report and others
on Thursday: fifth-round tight end D.J. Williams, sixth-round
guard Caleb Schlauderaff, sixth-round linebacker Ricky Elmore
and seventh-round tight end Ryan Taylor. The others announced by
the Packers were sixth-round inside linebacker D.J. Smith and
seventh-round defensive end Lawrence Guy.
The eighth player is cornerback Davon House, a fourth-round pick
from New Mexico State who agreed to terms, according to a
source.
Cobb’s four-year deal is worth the prescribed $3,209,430 from
the “2011 Rookie Compensation Pool” document that all teams and
agents are using to hammer out contracts in short order. A
source told Packer Report that his signing bonus will be
$834,000.

THUMBS UP
To management of the Packers for hiring Jason Wahlers as the
director of public relations. A native of Green Bay, the
33-year-old Wahlers will begin his duties within two weeks. He
spent nine years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including the
last six as public relations manager, and gained a reputation
for his even-handed dealings with the media and understated
approach to the profession.
"His experience and personality is an excellent fit for the
organization and the community," Jason Wied, vice president of
administration, said in a statement. "He will foster great
relationships internally with all our staff, and externally with
local and national media, which will be crucial moving forward."
The Packers had concerns about the tenor and direction of their
PR staff in recent years. There was sentiment within the
organization to open up some avenues of access to its key people
and create a less restrictive and friendlier atmosphere.
To Joe Fan, public relations might not seem like an important
facet of the Packers' operation. In truth, it is a vital
department because of its role influencing how the team's
message is transmitted to the public.
From 1974-2003, Lee Remmel ran the department in Green Bay.
Exuding warmth, he made friends for the organization across the
country and state. The press box at Lambeau Field is named in
honor of Remmel.
Wahlers succeeds Jeff Blumb, who was let go in March. Blumb had
been only the eighth head publicist in club history.
Wahlers holds a bachelor's degree from Iowa State and a master's
degree from Ohio University. From 1999-2000, he worked in group
sales for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers minor-league baseball
team.

THUMBS DOWN
The opening 11-on-11 work Saturday night was met with
disapproval by one position coach. Mike Trgovac, the demanding
coach of the defensive line, wasn't pleased with what he saw.
"That's the worst footwork I've seen in years," Trgovac told his
players, the half smile across his features letting them know it
wasn't the end of the world. As Trgovac spoke, veteran B.J. Raji
nodded in agreement.

ODDS AND ENDS
Rookie Derek Sherrod, the first-round draft choice, worked with
the No. 1 offense at the LG position formerly held by
Daryn Colledge. Sherrod also took a few snaps at LT. The
No. 2 LG was T.J. Lang.
At LT, Marshall Newhouse worked behind Chad Clifton. Rookie
Caleb Schlauderaff was No. 2 behind RG Josh Sitton, and Nick
McDonald was No. 2 behind C Scott Wells.
Charlie Peprah was given the opening-day assignment at SS ahead
of Morgan Burnett. Ditto for Frank Zombo at ROLB over Erik
Walden and Brad Jones.
Mike Neal worked with the No. 1 base defense at RE ahead
of Howard Green.
Rookie free agent Elisah Joseph reported to camp with an
undisclosed injury and was placed temporarily on the
reserve/non-football injury list.
The Packers didn't assign the No. 89 jersey, presumably because
they still would like to re-sign free agent wide receiver James
Jones. John Kuhn's No. 30 hasn't been assigned, either.
On the other hand, they did assign No. 20 to running back
Alex Green. It had been worn for five years by safety Atari
Bigby, another free agent who obviously will not return.
The No. 57 jersey worn by linebacker Matt Wilhelm, another
free agent, was given to linebacker Ricky Elmore.
Newly re-signed K Mason Crosby isn't permitted "even to break a
sweat," as he put it, on club property until the league year
starts Aug. 4. Thus, Crosby was out looking for an available
football field to kick at Saturday afternoon.
Brandon Underwood, a cornerback his first two seasons, practiced
strictly at safety.

---------------------------------------------------------
Green Bay - Opportunities for cornerback Sam Shields and
linebacker Frank Zombo came last year. Opportunity for Nick
McDonald, *****the third member of the Green Bay Packers' 2010
class of rookie free agents, is right around the corner.*****
In what could be a free-for-all replacing Daryn Colledge at left
guard, the anonymous McDonald is going to get one of the first
shots to prove that he can protect Aaron Rodgers for a Super
Bowl team.
"Everybody talks about Sam and Frank," coach Mike McCarthy said
just before the lockout began. "But, I mean, this guy
here. . . . I think he could be one of
those guys when you say, 'Who made the biggest jump from year
one to year two?' I think he has a very bright future."
Is it possible that McDonald, a two-year starter at Grand Valley
State who spent most of his first season toiling at center but
not playing a snap from scrimmage, could become a functional
starter in just his second season?...
Besides no playing time, McDonald's arms (311/8 inches) are
considered rather short and his 40-yard time was a ho-hum 5.26
seconds (Colledge ran 5.06 in 2006). McDonald did 27 reps on the
bench press compared to 22 for Colledge.
"He's a good athlete, a good fit for what we do," Philbin said.
"Serious guy. Smart. It's going to be a big camp for him."
Philbin said it would be ideal to have two players, not three,
competing full-bore at left guard. He just didn't know who they
would be.
Besides McDonald, the other possibilities would seem to be T.J.
Lang, sixth-round pick Caleb Schlauderaff, free agent Ray
Dominguez and possibly top pick Derek Sherrod.
McCarthy, who says it's a telltale indicator if a player doesn't
show major improvement in his second season, didn't see it from
Lang. Spring wrist surgery ruined Lang's second off-season, and
the lockout affected this one.
Early training camp will tell if Lang added the strength that
the coaches considered a necessity. He is expected to swing
between guard and right tackle.
"I always felt he was a guard," McCarthy said. "But you watch
and he's very natural at tackle. He has a better feel out there,
which is obvious. He has played more out there."
Schlauderaff is a down-and-dirty, ugly-body type of player with
excellent natural strength and the ability to run and pull. The
other rookie, Dominguez, has phenomenal bulk, long arms and is
light on his feet. A starting tackle for three years at
Arkansas, he will need to get in better shape.
The Packers were overjoyed that Sherrod fell to them at the
bottom of the first round. He was drafted to be Clifton's
successor at left tackle, the only position that he played at
Mississippi State.
Sherrod, Philbin said, will begin camp on the left side. Based
on the consensus of scouts, Sherrod doesn't seem to be a guard.
At this point, he isn't that strong, he isn't that physical and
he isn't that thickly built.
His pluses - athleticism, arm length, intelligence, technique -
suggest tackle, not guard.
In this strangest of camps, almost any move is plausible. Bryan
Bulaga would appear to have a better chance than Sherrod at
guard because he played there in 2007 at Iowa and has the
stouter build.
Philbin, however, said he would prefer keeping Bulaga at right
tackle, mainly because he's just 22 years old and was adequate
in 16 starts there.
Like McDonald, Marshall Newhouse made the team as a rookie but
never played. Clearly, he was better at left tackle than guard
last August. His feet are good, his power was marginal. He has
to be more aggressive.
Josh Sitton and center Scott Wells were the unit's two best
players in the previous two seasons. Each has a year left on his
contract.
"Sitton reminds me of a young (Steve) Hutchinson," an NFC scout
said in November. "He stumbles around a little bit like
Hutchinson but he's a tremendous anchor. He's not going to be
real active in the secondary, but you're not going to line up in
front of him and beat him with strength."
Philbin praised Sitton's pass blocking and said his run blocking
was good, too, although he'd like to see Sitton generate more
movement at the point of attack.
The Packers tried to replace Wells with departed Jason Spitz in
summer 2009. When injuries struck, Wells replied with his two
finest seasons. Because of his commitment and field savvy,
Wells' coaches have always appreciated his play more than
outsiders.
"There's a lot of centers like Wells," one scout said late last
season. "I think they've been concerned about his size, but he
ties things together well. I don't think Wells is mean, but he
is a battler."
Clifton, 35, allowed a career-high eight sacks and 29½
pressures. He isn't as automatic in protection as he once was...

TE D. J. Williams is a guy i like as a rookie:
Much of the buzz Sunday was over the re-signing of wide receiver
James Jones. But an equal buzz should have been over the return
of tight end Jermichael Finley and the potential of rookie tight
end D.J. Williams. Finley is being held back so he doesn't push
too hard coming off knee surgery and is limited to individual
drills and seven-on-sevens. But he's definitely ready to go. On
one route he came back for an errant pass and snatched it out of
the air before a defender could get a hand on it. In another
drill, where multiple quarterbacks throw to different receivers,
two quarterbacks accidentally both threw to Finley. He caught
one ball, tucked it in and caught the other. Williams,
meanwhile, is a very smooth route runner. He made a beautiful
over-the-shoulder catch on a corner route and looked good on
several other catches. He still has to prove himself with the
pads on and when defenders are in his face, but so far so good.

Second-round pick Randall Cobb is working with the No. 1 kick
return unit and there's a reason. The way he hit a hole on his
only attempt, it's obvious what the Packers saw in him.
