Why Thompson didn't draft a DE high:
The 2010 season and a win in Super Bowl XLV was supposed to be
the pinnacle of achievement for everyone on the Packers’ roster.
It wasn’t for defensive end Mike Neal.
The 2010 second-round draft pick played in just two games after
missing the first three with an abdominal strain then the final
11 plus the postseason with a shoulder injury. Neal missed a
total of five games, all during his redshirt freshman year, at
Purdue because of injury.
Sitting and watching was a nightmare.
“That was probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in
my life,” Neal said. “I’ve never missed a season due to an
injury. I’ve been through a lot of tough things, but to not be
able to play the game of football and feel like I’m a
disappointment to not only myself but to my team is probably one
of the biggest things.
“I put a lot of pressure on myself. So, for me missing the
season, truly has me feeling like an animal inside. Next year is
going to be good.”
Neal participated in the Donald Driver charity softball game
Sunday in Grand Chute and said the shoulder, specifically the
rotator cuff, is close to 100 percent. Rehab has focused on
flexibility and strength in the joint.
As eager as all players are for the lockout to end, it allowed
more time for Neal’s shoulder to heal. But players often make
the most significant improvement of their careers between their
rookie and sophomore seasons. The lockout has kept players from
coaches and offseason programs.
“The good thing is I’ve been able to get away and rehab and take
my mind off what I would consider a disappointing season,” Neal
said. “The learning part of it is something that I will miss.
That’s definitely a bad thing because I need that learning, to
sit around the players and learn the system and do more things.
“That’s the biggest thing I’m missing, the mental part of the
game.”
Which is what Neal needs most.
There are few questions to be asked in regard to Neal’s physical
ability. He is a physical specimen who set weightlifting records
at Purdue and is known for his strength — even on the
professional level. If the shoulder is healthy, there will be
few concerns about his conditioning.
Neal, however, may be expected to start this season if Cullen
Jenkins is lost via free agency. Johnny Jolly is also expected
to leave after being suspended for all of 2010 for a violation
of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy and run-ins with the police
in Houston.
Neal needs all the mental reps with the coaching staff he can
get.
“You hear a lot of talk,” Neal said. “I’m just trying to be
optimistic and be ready to do my job when they call on me.”
One thing is certain — Neal cannot wait to return to the
football field.
“A whole lot of hell on the field,” Neal said when asked what
fans should expect. “That’s it. A whole lot of hell.”

Just so everyone knows the Green Bay Packers have won FOUR of
FIVE SUPER BOWLS.
The rest if the division, one.
While going to a total of 6.
I guess it sucks the finish if your from Packerland.

It means every team in the NFC Norse Division sucks except for
the one team that can finish the job!

They're so good they couldn't even win the division.

I suspect the Bears will beat the Packers twice this year and
win the division. I am hopeful for a superbowl win but that is
not an easy thing to predict for any team ever.
