Well, its all well and nice to be 8-0 but nothing is won in
November. I know everybody won't cry for me - I can't shake the
feeling that there is no repeat if the defence doesn't tighten
up between now and January.
One cannot expect the lights-out offence to bail them out every
game, especially in pressure-packed playoff games in lousy
weather. I wonder how Dom Capers sleeps well at night.

Lack of communication cause of breakdowns
By Mike Spofford
The issue of defensive communication hasn’t come up much since
Head Coach Mike McCarthy switched schemes and coordinators
heading into 2009, but McCarthy pointed to that as the defensive
downfall on Sunday in San Diego.
In compiling 460 total yards, the Chargers several times had
receivers running free in the secondary, particularly in the
fourth quarter when receiver Vincent Jackson caught two
touchdown passes with hardly a defender around him.
“We had a number of communication errors that resulted in
players put in bad positions, bad situations, and the Chargers
took advantage of it,” McCarthy said on Monday, emphasizing that
communication would be the “No. 1 topic of conversation” when
the players return to work on Tuesday.
San Diego recorded seven “explosive” plays of 20-plus yards, a
disturbing trend for Green Bay’s defense this season, and
McCarthy said the team’s overall game operation, from
substitutions to getting plays in from the sidelines, wasn’t
“clean.”
“We’ve been talking about communication too much the last couple
weeks and we have to do a better job,” he said. “It starts with
the coaches, and it starts with me.”

GREEN BAY, Calif. -- This was a football game that raced away
from hackneyed film school melodrama to Hitchcockian thriller.
It suddenly went from predictable to goosebump in a most
unlikely theater.
Hercules would have gone all Barney Fife over this one. He would
have wimped out, traded his loin cloth for a salt-and-pepper
suit, retreated and called in sick from this labor the Chargers
were assigned by the football Gods.
They had to try and beat the Packers in the hostile, rainy
environment of Qualcomm Stadium, with Green Bay players urging
the thousands in their wandering flock to make noise when the
visiting team that happened to be playing at home was on the
field.
It wasn’t bad enough the Chargers had to meet the World
Champions on Sunday coming off two straight defeats. Battered,
they had to play the unbeaten Packers, fresh off a bye, in one
of their 30 homes away from home.
And the local kids tried, they tried like hell, but they just
weren’t up to it, doing their best to hold onto the rope
before letting go at the end and losing 45-38.
It was a terribly entertaining football game, fun to watch,
full of the unusual and the usual -- one of the latter being the
Chargers’ inability to win a big game against a good team.
But they played their 4-4 butts off, tell you that, and the
loss kept them in a three-way tie for first place in the AFC
West with Oakland and Kansas City, also Sunday losers. This
division has taken on the look of 2010 NFC West, which is not a
sunrise by Maxfield Parrish.
They proved they can play with the best team in the NFL, for
what that’s worth. But another poor first quarter by
quarterback Philip Rivers, which saw him toss two interceptions
that were returned for touchdowns -- by DBs Charlie Peprah and
Tramon Williams -- helped create a 21-7 Green Bay mountain, and
the Chargers didn’t quite have enough gear to get to the
top.
Rivers settled down. He would complete 26 of 48 passes for 385
yards and four scores -- three to Vincent Jackson and another to
tight end Antonio Gates -- but most of it came too late. For the
first time in his career, he threw three picks, the third coming
in the final, desperate moments when San Diego had turned a
45-24 yawner with 10:27 to play into a thriller. He also made a
terrible decision on the penultimate drive, throwing to nobody
while in the pocket and picking up a deserved intentional
grounding penalty.

Comment From Bill
Mike, do you believe the party line that “poor communication” is
the reason for the Packers defensive issues? I would suggest
that the fact that the Packers lead the league in interceptions
and rank 31st in passing yards are two sides of the same coin:
they take risks to offset their physical weaknesses (Woodson’s
age, Burnett’s hand, Williams’ shoulder, and who knows what
about Shields). So far, this risk-taking has worked – the
Packers are undefeated. Injuries will get better (but Woodson
will get older and slower). Do you think this ends well?

Mike Vandermause:
Poor communication is just a buzz phrase for "we screwed up."
You have a pretty good handle on the state of the secondary.
Woodson isn't as good as he used to be -- age catches up with
all of us. Tramon Williams has struggled with an injury during
the first half of the season. Sam Shields is not what he was
last year. Burnett is playing with a club on his arm and is
essentially a "rookie" still learning the ropes. And clearly the
Packers miss Pro Bowler Nick Collins. All of those factors, plus
the lack of an adequate pass rush, have contributed to some of
the defensive woes. But having said all that, this defense still
makes plays when it has to. Thus, I think the Packers could win
the Super Bowl, as is. I think this could end well, as long as
the offense continues to carry a heavy load for this team and
the defense continues to force turnovers.

Patented Packer PI yet the refs keep the flags in their pocket.
Then there goes Cobb. The route is on.

They call it incomplete, then realize the Packers came up with
it then say it is an interception. Noi team gets more calls
then the Packers.
They had it right the first time it is an incomplete pass it
touched the ground twice before Woodson got control.

Rogers is putting together the greatest season by a QB in NFL
history. Only thing that could stop him is if he sits down the
stretch.
