Excerpts from game report:
The Cardinals, who were penalized nine times for 50 yards in the
first half, jumped offside on third and 3 to give the Packers a
first down at the Arizona 27. On the next play, rookie Alex
Green patiently set up his blocks on a screen pass, broke three
tackles and zipped 25 yards to set up his own 2-yard touchdown
run.
"I like that kid," a personnel man for another NFL team said at
halftime. "He played in a pass offense, but he can run big
between the tackles. He gives them another inside presence. At
the very least, he will be a contributing backup, with the arrow
pointing up. That was a good value pick."...
...Most of the scouts in attendance were focused on players that
the Packers might cut but possibly could help lesser teams.
"Green Bay is deep," the scout said. "I think they have some
good players that may come free because of their numbers."
The Packers took the lead on the first play of the fourth
quarter when Flynn found wide receiver Chastin West for a
97-yard touchdown. Exhibition-game records don't exist, but in
the regular season the Packers have completed just one pass
longer (Robert Brooks, 99, 1995)...

Who would fall for that? The only way this guy could be
confuses for Favre is if you have cataracts or are really drunk.
He looks like him a little bit but not enough for anyone to
actually think he is Brett Favre.

Extra points
• The Packers might have something in receiver Chastin West, who
was on their practice squad last season and had the 97-yard
touchdown reception on Friday night. That could be a tough
choice on final cuts between him and undrafted rookie Tori
Gurley. I still like Gurley better because of his size and
potential. You can always find a 6-1 receiver, but a talented
player at 6-4 is a different story.
• Starting inside linebackers Desmond Bishop and A.J. Hawk look
good playing together. The Cardinals used a bunch receiver
formation a couple of times, which is tough on linebackers
because they’re not as good turning and running as defensive
backs. But those two passed off guys well and it looks like
they’ve worked on it. Hawk is around the ball all the time, but
I’d like to see him get there with more authority. He wrestles
the guy down, and in run fits he’s right there all the time.
You’d just like to see him blow up guys a little more.

Green Bay - The Green Bay Packers wanted bigger and better than
Daryn Colledge at left guard and shouldered the onus for finding
that player
Three weeks into training camp they've come up with T.J. Lang, a
brawler with a far different playing style from his predecessor.
"Not to belittle Colledge, but I think T.J. will definitely be
more effective," nose tackle B.J. Raji said Monday shortly after
coach Mike McCarthy announced Lang had beat out rookie Derek
Sherrod.
"Because his confidence level will be there. We do some things
in protection to help interior guys, so I think he will benefit
from that. And I think his overall aggression will eventually
wear guys down."
Three nights earlier, Colledge had started at left guard for the
Arizona Cardinals in an exhibition game at Lambeau Field. On an
early second-quarter run, Raji manhandled Colledge in the hole
and swallowed the ball carrier for minus-1.
It was a classic example of Colledge's inability to block the
3-technique D-tackle in the run game. That deficiency was an
important reason why the Packers passed on re-signing him for
more than two years and, ultimately, forced themselves to
improve...

Green Bay - How frustrated is Green Bay Packers defensive end
Mike Neal?
"I can't even answer that question, that's how (ticked) I am,"
Neal said.
For the third time in his 18-month career with the Packers, he's
sidelined with an injury. This time around, he lucked out
because the left knee injury that looked so bad when he hurt it
in practice Aug. 16 turned out not to be significant.
Neal said there's still swelling in it, but tests showed no
tears.
Coach Mike McCarthy did not rule out the possibility that Neal
would play Friday night against Indianapolis, but he said it was
unlikely Neal would practice the rest of the week. Neal said
he'd be ready whenever the medical staff gives him the
go-ahead...

Another undrafted rookie will probably make th roster this
season - a big one.
Thumbs up
There’s no substitute for size, and among the group of
inexperienced receivers trying to make the Packers’ roster, Tori
Gurley has more of it than anyone else.
It was on display during Tuesday’s practice inside The Don
Hutson Center.
At 6-foot-4, Gurley can make plays that guys like Chastin West
(6-1), Diondre Borel (6-0), Kerry Taylor (6-0) and Antonio
Robinson (6-1) cannot.
His height allowed him to make a spectacular catch against
cornerback Tramon Williams during a team period. It was a
back-shoulder throw along the right sideline that Matt Flynn
sailed a little. Gurley jumped, extended his arms and caught it
just out of Williams’ reach. It’s doubtful any of those other
young receivers would have gotten to that ball.
West’s five-catch, 134-yard performance in Friday’s preseason
game against Arizona seemingly has given him the best shot to
make it as the sixth receiver. West got increased work with the
starting offense the last two days in practice. But Gurley, too,
got some reps with starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who hit
him on a deep route during a blitz period.
An undrafted rookie from South Carolina, Gurley is the
second-tallest skill-position player on the Packers’ offensive
roster. Only tight end Jermichael Finley, at 6-5, is taller. The
tallest receiver among the Packers’ returning group is the 6-3
Jordy Nelson.

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy said today he would like
his starters to play around two quarters in Friday’s road
preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts.
The third preseason game generally is the one in which the No. 1
units see the most work, and that won’t change in McCarthy’s
plan.
Other highlights from McCarthy’s post-practice presser:
*Graham Harrell has put together good training camp. We’ve been
very fortunate to give Graham number of snaps he has gotten. Has
definitely improved from Cleveland to Arizona.
*Young outside linebackers are getting better (Lattimore,
So’oto). This is not a normal training camp. It’s a different
year.
*Evaluation process doesn’t change despite shortened training
camp.
*Our tempo today was excellent, but way too many penalties. This
is kind of where we are...
